New York band DEADLANDS exorcise stress, anxiety, doubt, and trauma via the unforgettable melodic metalcore that defines their new EP, titled SEVEN.
SEVEN, a concept EP in which each song correlates to one of the seven deadly sins, was released this past summer Spinefarm.
Today, DEADLANDS have shared the nightmarish visualizer for "Wither."
"When we were writing 'Wither,' we wanted to embody the erosion of self-worth when motivation dies," says singer Kasey Karlsen. "When you have no goal and no purpose, it slowly kills you inside until you can no longer pull yourself back to reality. Having dealt with depression, I know how difficult it is to manifest even the smallest tasks, but you have to start with one thing at a time, or it will consume you."
She continues, "I knew as soon as the song was done that the video needed to have the most disgusting, gnarly, haunting witch in it. Awful hair, and makeup that will give you nightmares. I wanted to be completely unrecognizable."
As for the song's relationship to the EP's concert, she says, "The ropes tied around me are symbolic of the mental barriers sloth puts on us, and how it can control us like puppets. I had the ending playing in my head for the longest time, where the witch essentially just shuts down and melts due to their own apathy. It was 85 degrees, I got 20 mosquito bites, but it was so worth it."
The band also has a short run of tour dates set for December.

DEADLANDS are a New York-based band infusing fresh and unexpected energy into traditional post-hardcore. Founding member and frontwoman Kasey Karlsen is used to laying her cards face up on the table, as she has been writing about her toxic relationships, friendships, hardships, and current events - basically all topics that are near and dear to her heart - since she was in high school. She also draws over a million followers across platforms, thanks to her compelling content. CJ Arey, professionally known as "NO SHADE," creates melodies for the guitar and bass while simultaneously inputting his own flare of trap and cinematic references into the production of the music. In 2024, the band headlined shows across the United States while making stops to perform at Louder Than Life, Aftershock, and Blue Ridge Festivals. Deadlands are dropping the SEVEN EP in 2025, with tour plans on the horizon. Fans of bands like Asking Alexandria, Motionless In White, Escape the Fate, Falling in Reverse, Wage War, and Bring Me The Horizon will be magnetically drawn to DEADLANDS.
