Surveillance camera captures double shooting at Muncie convenience store
MUNCIE, Ind. - A surveillance camera at the Zipp's convenience store in Muncie captured the moment two men were shot as they sat in a vehicle. The shooting was one of three that happened in a five-hour span in Muncie on Friday night and Saturday morning.
The video shows three men sitting in a white sedan when shots were fired from the south. The bullets shattered the car's windows and sent those men scrambling for safety. One of the victims was sitting in the back seat and was forced to crawl out of the vehicle after he was shot in the leg.
Another man was shot in that incident, and police said both are in stable condition.
Roughly an hour after that shooting, police found a man shot near East 6th and South Monroe Streets. That is just a few blocks away from the Zipp's, but it's unclear if they're connected.
A few hours before both those incidents, two men were shot at an apartment complex in the 3200 block of South Walnut Street. Ashuntiz Stewart, 27, was critically injured in the shooting and died on Monday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
"It just hurts my heart just to see the violence that has plagued our community," activist Jasmine Taylor said.
Taylor added that it was disappointing to see an eruption of violence in her city because it's something she and so many others work hard to try and prevent. She said generational poverty on the south side of Muncie has caused many people to choose a life on the streets.
"You can change," Taylor said. "You can start today and decide 'you know what, I am done, I want to turn a little leaf.' Just because you've been labeled something doesn't mean that you always have to live up to that. You can change."
Pastor Kevin Woodgett with Muncie's Concerned Clergy said the shootings have made him realize he needs to work harder. He hopes it serves as a wake up call to everyone.
"We are praying for the families of all of those that are involved and hoping that through this we can at least bring some positive change even through the tragedy," Woodgett said.
Taylor hopes the city takes notice, saying leaders have abandoned the south side at a time when it needs more help than ever.
"We need them to help us and invest in us, not just say they want to do it," Taylor said. "And when something happens then they want to do a press release. We need more than that. You really need to have more action and really walk alongside us and help us solve these problems."
Muncie PD declined FOX59/CBS4's interview request for this story. In a statement, a spokesperson said detectives are still working each case and making progress.
The department indicated that it needs the public's help to solve all of its cases and is asking anyone who may know anything to give them a call at (765) 747-4867.
