The heat is on and isn't going anywhere in central Indiana

Saturday marked our first 90° day of the year, the latest first occurrence in six years for Indianapolis. However, it didn't feel like that due to the spike in dew points reaching into the 70s. McCordsville (Hancock Co) 109°, U Indy (Marion Co) and Frankfort (Clinton Co) 108°. Indianapolis hit 101° for a heat index yesterday afternoon. More of this on tap today.

Indianapolis has had the first 90° heat as early as April 15 (1925) and as late as September 1 (1960). The first 90° this year occurred a week after the average first occurrence of June 14th.

Sunday will bring more of the same hot and humid weather but with lighter winds than Saturday. The breezy southwest winds we saw yesterday ease up offering even less relief from the heat. Highs will reach the low 90s with heat indices topping 100° in some areas. Be sure to stay safe: wear sunscreen, limit time outdoors, and stay hydrated especially with several Game 7 watch parties happening throughout the evening

The hot dome has staying power for most of the week. Heat Advisories continue through Tuesday with Extreme Heat Warnings in effect for our far northern counties into the northern third of the state.

That ridge associated with the hot dome will weaken slightly by midweek. Because of that, it may reposition itself just south and allow for afternoon pop-up rain activity. Dry hours will dominate each day Tuesday and beyond. However, don't be surprised if a daytime shower or storm occurs with the peak heating of the day.
