Thieves caught on camera busting out windows, ransacking cars across Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS - Dozens of car windows were smashed as thieves went on a criminal rampage in two Indianapolis neighborhoods.

On Tuesday morning, residents along E 36th Place woke up to broken glass everywhere. Neighbors said thieves hit nearly 30 cars in the neighborhood, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

"They busted his window out and ransacked his car," Debbie Anderson said as she stood in front of her son's windowless truck.

Down the street, other neighbors were sweeping up glass shards in the street, trying to find something to protect their interiors from early morning showers.

One family, who asked not to be identified, had two of their cars hit. The thieves broke into their truck, stole $200 and then broke into the family's other vehicle.

A neighbor's security camera captured the thieves strolling down the street dressed in all black. Both appeared to be carrying large backpacks.

"Whoever did this y'all need to get your kids," Anderson said "I'm praying that they do get caught up."

A similar thing happened the night before in a neighborhood near 62nd Street and Guion Road.

A security camera captured a gang of criminals breaking into nearly a dozen vehicles.

The thieves were dressed head-to-toe in black and found an unlocked SUV. They began rummaging through it, took something and then went on their way.

While one thief was doing that, two others were scouting out other nearby cars.

"We see doorbell footage that's on a residence or maybe on the exterior door of a garage help us with investigations," IMPD Officer Drew Brown said.

Officers are investigating both cases but haven't determined whether or not they're related.

In the meantime, IMPD asks people to not make it easy for criminals to take advantage.

"Try to keep valuables out of your vehicle if you are going to leave it parked somewhere," Brown said. "Even if you're going to leave your car parked for a minute."

Brown also encouraged victims to report these incidents so detectives can better track when and where these break-ins are happening.

Anyone with information on either of these cases can contact Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS and you can remain anonymous.
