Tips for spotting AI-generated videos and photos

(WXIN/WTTV) - It's getting harder and to identify AI-generated images and videos, but a few telltale signs can help you spot a fake.

According to the Better Business Bureau, the difference between genuine photos or videos and sophisticated computer-generated ones can come down to subtle cues.

A recent video purportedly showed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy surrendering to Russia. It was quickly debunked, however, due to some visual inconsistencies.

They included shadows and light that seemed to flicker on the Ukraine leader's face but not on the rest of his body. The body language also appeared suspect, as AI often has a hard time replicating how the human body moves and reacts.

Be on the lookout for uneven facial features and a non-glossy "airbrush"-like texture. Pay close attention to hands-AI-generated images still have a tough time rendering them correctly.

With text and speech, watch out for typos, incorrect or outdated information, repetitive words or phrases and a robotic, emotionless voice.

Doing a reverse image search on a picture can show you all the websites where it has appeared, giving you a better idea of the context of the image and where it originated. A reverse image search could also point you to a website debunking the image as a fake.

Bottom line: with this technology quickly evolving, it's more important than ever to look at everything with a critical eye.
