Tipton County Sheriff's deputies arrest man during traffic stop involving car linked to Chicago homi
TIPTON COUNTY, Ind. - Tipton County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man during a traffic stop involving a vehicle that is connected to a Chicago homicide case.
According to a press release, TCSO deputies heard a police radio broadcast around 2:10 p.m. that indicated a suspect in a Chicago homicide case may be driving a white Dodge Charger in Indiana. Police radio traffic indicated the vehicle was on U.S. Highway 31 near Argos and Plymouth.
A short time later, Indiana State Police issued a radio broadcast that reported that the vehicle had passed a traffic camera in Kokomo while moving southbound on Reed Road. The information led TCSO deputies to believe the driver of the Charger may attempt to get on U.S. Highway 31 again.
TCSO deputies then observed the Charger on U.S. Highway 31 near its exit for State Road 28. Police reported that the Charger was speeding when deputies saw it.
TCSO personnel began to follow the car after spotting it. The agency also asked the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office to get its deputies in position to help conduct a traffic stop at the intersection of U.S. Highway 31 and 236th Street.
Ultimately, police took the driver of the vehicle - Carlos Keith - into custody during the stop. During a search of the Charger, police found 2.5 ounces of marijuana and $762 in cash.
After the stop, Keith was booked into the Tipton County Jail. He was preliminarily charged with possession of marijuana and dealing of marijuana.
TCSO did not elaborate on Keith's potential connection to the Chicago homicide case in its press release. It is currently unclear if Keith is, indeed, the homicide suspect police were searching for or if he was the only person in the Charger when deputies stopped it.
