Tornado warning issued in part of west central Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS - The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for a portion of west central Indiana.




At 6:43 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Fountain and Warren counties. The warning was not due to expire until 7:45 p.m.




At 7:02 p.m., however, the agency indicated that the warning was canceled because the storms it was tracking had weakened. The NWS reported that the storms had weakened to the point where they were no longer capable of producing tornadoes.




At 7:24 p.m., the agency issued a tornado warning for southwestern Fountain County, nixing the cancellation it had previously sent out. The most current tornado warning the NWS has issued is not slated to expire until 8 p.m.




In its latest warning, the NWS indicated that a thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Covington and moving east at 15 mph. Per the NWS, the system may produce quarter-sized hail.




The tornado warning was issued after radar technology indicated there was storm rotation in the area.




The NWS is encouraging Hoosiers in Fountain County to take shelter and avoid windows. Roofs, windows, trees, mobile homes and vehicles are likely to be damaged as the system moves through the area.




The NWS issued a tornado watch for portions of west central Indiana Tuesday afternoon. Among the counties impacted by the watch are Montgomery, Tippecanoe, Fountain and Parke. The tornado watch in west central Indiana is not due to expire until 9 p.m.




Several tornado warnings were issued for counties on the Illinois side of the Illinois-Indiana border earlier Tuesday evening. Those warnings have since expired.
