(WXIN/WTTV) - Shopping for a car is never easy, especially when you're looking for something safe and affordable for a teenage driver.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has done the homework for you by testing more than 120 new and used vehicles with help from Consumer Reports. They combined those results with Kelley Blue Book prices in several categories to find the best combinations of safety and value.
For small cars, the Toyota Corolla (2017-2019, 2023 or later model years) topped the list, followed by the Honda Insight and Mazda 3 hatchback. Prices in the category ranged from $9,500 to $19,000.
When it comes to the midsize category, Toyota was tops again. This time, it was the Camry (2018 or later model years). Prices ranged from $13,000 to about $20,000 in the category.
Looking for a small SUV? You'll spend between $12,000 and $20,000. The top pick in that category is the 2019 BMW X2.
Top choices in the midsize SUV category include the Acura MDX (2017-2020 model years), Volvo XC90 (2018 or newer model years) and Lexus NX (2018 or newer model years). The price range there is between $13,000 and $20,000.
The list is intended for young, inexperienced drivers. That means some of the models don't pack the horsepower or sporty feel of other cars, and they don't include anything under 2,700 pounds.
Instead, some of the top considerations include good handling and headlights, short stopping distances and safety features like anti-collision detection.
