First real summer-like day in central Indiana Thursday
Stepping outside Thursday gave Hoosiers a real preview of summer around here. Dew points for the first time in 2025 hit the 70° mark and highs in the 80s occurred across the board. 87° was the high in Indianapolis, the warmest since September. It also occurred on the date where we typically see our first 85° high.
Because of these things, our atmosphere is primed up and unstable ahead of storm chances. One caveat is that not everyone will see storms thanks to a strong atmospheric lid (Cap) in place.
Storms for some tonight: higher chance north
SHOULD any storm develop, the timeframe will be 10-11 p.m. and after. The higher chance of any storms developing will be north of I-70. Because of our unstable atmosphere, any developed storms could quickly become severe. The main threat is large hail but all other hazards are also possible. Peak coverage around 30-40% of central Indiana for the storms tonight. Things quickly wind down heading into the overnight hours.
More widespread severe storm risk Friday
The warmth and modest levels of humidity stick around Friday, creating another unstable environment for any storms to develop during the peak heating of the day. Expect highs in the low-to-mid 80s ahead of a cold front.

A higher risk for severe storms exists south of Indianapolis. Many of these storms may come with damaging winds (60-70+ MPH), damaging hail and high-end tornadoes. The timing for these will be late afternoon into the evening. Some of the storms in the Moderate Risk (see below) for severe weather could be long-lived.

We'll be monitoring both storm threats but now is the time to be sure you're prepared in case a warning gets issued. Remember that winds are often an underrated threat and can do as much damage as some tornadoes.

Weekend looks fantastic; changes into next week
Saturday for Quals at IMS looks breezy but nice. Expect lots of sunshine and highs in the low-to-mid 70s. Humidity levels will drop behind the cold front Friday night and make the air feel much more comfortable outside. Minus a few more clouds on Sunday, it looks to pretty much be a carbon copy of Saturday's weather conditions across central Indiana.

Getting into next week, another potentially active weather stretch looms with a few rain/storm chances. We could see additional heavy rain in spots during the next work week. Things also look to cool down as northwest flow moves back in. Highs a little below normal in the upper 60s and lower 70s are possible toward Memorial Day/Indy 500 weekend.
