Violent weekend across Indianapolis leaves 6 dead in shootings

INDIANAPOLIS - Six people died in a series of shootings across Indianapolis from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon.

The violent stretch included a shooting at a park, a police pursuit, a crash and the deaths of two 19-year-old best friends.

42nd Street and Mitthoeffer Road

Indianapolis Metropolitan police were in the area near East 42nd Street and Mitthoeffer Road when they heard gunfire around 9 a.m. Saturday.

Officers found three people had been shot, including a woman and two men. One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene and the other man died at an area hospital.

Officers saw two men attempting to the leave the scene and followed them, leading to a high-speed pursuit in which the fleeing vehicle reached speeds of more than 100 mph.

The chase began at 42nd Street and Mitthoeffer Road and proceeded to East 10th Street, where the vehicle hit an ambulance and another vehicle.

One of the men got out; police quickly took him into custody. The driver eventually stopped at West 16th Street and Winfield Avenue and crashed into several parked vehicles and a utility pole after police performed a PIT maneuver.

Police eventually detained the driver.

Officers arrested 33-year-old Marquis Craig and 27-year-old Zay McDaniels on preliminary charges of murder.

Thatcher Park shooting

One person died and another was hurt in a Saturday night shooting at a west side park.

Officers were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. to the 4600 block of West Vermont Street, the location of Thatcher Park, for a reported shooting.

Police found two people had been shot, a woman and a man. Both were initially reported to be in critical condition, but the woman later died from her injuries.

IMPD said a disturbance at a family gathering preceded the shooting, although they didn't provide additional details about what happened.

Cornelius Avenue death investigation

Around 8 a.m. Sunday, IMPD arrived in the 4300 block of Cornelius Avenue for a death investigation.

Officers found two unresponsive people lying on the sidewalk suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The 19-year-old victims were best friends who graduated from Arsenal Tech, FOX59/CBS4 has learned. A neighbor who'd gone out for a walk found their bodies.

Neighbors told police about a loud party in the area hours before the shooting. Police were exploring a potential connection between the party and the shooting.

Investigators were asking neighbors to come forward with any information they may have and requested doorbell camera video from nearby homes.

Southeastern Avenue incident

One person died in a Sunday afternoon shooting on the near east side.

This followed a reported crash near the 800 block of Massachusetts Avenue. One vehicle struck another in the parking lot, and both vehicles left the area before ending up in the 3500 block of Southeastern Avenue.

Police were dispatched to Southeastern for a reported shooting and found a man had been shot at the location. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition and later died.

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from the earlier crash. They detained a person of interest in connection with the incident.

Anyone with information about any of the shootings should contact IMPD or call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS (8477).
