We're beginning to dry out following the largest single-day rainfall in one month. The 1.24" of rain on Wednesday erased a growing deficit for May. The total for the month now over 2.0". Spring 2025 ranks 23rd wettest and wettest since 2017. Some spots received isolated amounts closer to 4-5" of Doppler-estimated rain since yesterday.
An approaching warm front could spawn a few storms overnight. Coverage will be isolated but this may be the story just before sunrise on Thursday. Then, the warmest day of the year so far comes in the afternoon.
Tomorrow will bring the warmest air in months. Highs in the upper 80s (87° for Indianapolis) and the added mugginess will make it feel like a summer day in central Indiana. The predicted high of 87° is just shy of the record 88° most recently set in 2001.
With the added mugginess and heat, we will set the stage for the potential of storms Thursday evening. However, a strong CAP (atmospheric lid) will be in place and likely prevent most storms from developing. The storm chance is still there and if one were to spawn, it could be intense.
The storms remain a threat through Friday. Dry hours will be around to start Friday but the heat and mugginess stick around. Highs in the mid-to-low 80s are likely with a storm chance in the afternoon and evening. Some of these could provide heavy rain and the potential for severe storms. This may be the story Friday afternoon and early evening.
Once the cold front passes, another fantastic weekend will arrive with much cooler temperatures and dry times. Highs in the mid 70s with partly cloudy skies both Saturday and Sunday are on tap. Changes loom into next week thanks to another closed low that moves back into the region. That will cool us off and potentially make things cooler for the Indy 500.
