Warming starts Sunday ahead of an active workweek in central Indiana

Saturday was the coolest day in 10 days across central Indiana. It ended a streak of 8 days with highs at/above 70° as highs failed to get out of the 60s areawide. Lafayette didn't even get out of the upper 50s.

Thanks to an area of high pressure settling in overhead, things will remain quiet for the remainder of the weekend. Much like Saturday morning, Sunday morning will be chilly with our outlying counties possibly seeing lows in the upper 30s. While I don't think tonight's frost risk is widespread, some patchy frost will be possible in the coolest locations well north and northwest of Indianapolis

Sunday starts another warming trend across central Indiana. This will be the story for the last days of April through the middle of next week. After a chilly start, expect highs Sunday to rise into the upper 60s. Thanks to abundant sunshine, a few spots will likely hit 70°.

The warmth will peak on Monday and Tuesday, thanks to an upper-level ridge building overhead. The nicest of the pair will be Monday, as skies will be sunny with no rain! But the dry streak ends Tuesday ahead of a cold front that will come knocking. Showers and storms with some severe potential exists Tuesday afternoon and evening. Some uncertainty remains on the coverage of thunderstorms, so stay tuned for forecast updates.

The middle of the week will be the most active. The peak rain and storm chance will be Tuesday night with more scattered activity both Wednesday and Thursday. To end April and open May, some decent rains are likely. 7-day precipitation forecasts at this moment call for an additional 1-1.5" of rain through next Friday. April 2025 will finish as one of the wettest on record and we could add to the 7.68" we have under our belts already.

By next weekend, we'll start to dry out just in time for the Mini Marathon next Saturday. Although it will be a bit chilly with temperatures in the 40s next Saturday morning to kick off the marathon.
