Warming trend underway to open June in central Indiana

May closes with twelve consecutive below-average days




While Saturday brought improvements in the temperature department, the average high and low for the day are still below normal. Meteorological Spring ended with 38 days of below normal temperatures, 7 days normal temperatures and 47 days above normal. 12 of those 38 days occurred most recently. The period of May 20th-31st is the coldest for those group of dates in 22 years (2003).

May rainfall finished with 4.42" in Indianapolis, about a third of an inch below normal. 14 days this month contained measurable rain with the biggest one-day rain being May 20th (1.47"). Now we head into June Sunday as June is the wettest month on average for the Circle City.

June starts chilly but warming down the line




With clear skies overnight, Sunday will start cool with lows in the 40s. To put that in perspective, the normal low for June 1st is 59°. Heading out early in the morning? If so, a light jacket may be needed! That won't be the case all day long as we can expect sunny skies and more temperatures in the 70s. If you noticed the hazy skies Saturday, those stick around for Sunday and even into Monday. The haze is Canadian wildfire smoke.

Impacts from the smoke will be low at the surface. However, the smoke will create some colorful sunrises and sunsets. The warming trend continues into the week, potentially giving central Indiana the warmest air of the season so far. Indy's warmest temperature so far occurred on May 15th (87°). The warmest of this stretch will be Tuesday before another active weather stretch arrives. Humidity levels will also go up into next week.
