Ohio State Launches Free Tuition and Expanded Support to Boost College Access for Ohio Residents
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State University President Ted Carter on Wednesday announced a series of new programs aimed at making college more accessible and affordable for Ohio residents, including guaranteed free tuition for some students.
In his first State of the University address in 17 months, Carter outlined details of the Education for Citizenship 2035 plan, which he said is focused on academic excellence, world-class clinical care and student success. Among the initiatives unveiled are new pathways to free or reduced tuition and expanded support services.
Carter said 57% of Ohio State students currently graduate debt-free, but he hopes to increase that number. Beginning immediately, any Ohio student who earns a perfect score on the SAT or ACT will be guaranteed admission to Ohio State and will have all costs of attendance, including tuition, housing and dining, fully covered. These students will also receive a $500 research stipend.
Carter also announced that any Ohio resident attending an Ohio State regional campus with a family income under $100,000 will have their tuition covered. After their first year, in-state students in good academic standing will be able to transfer to the main Columbus campus and complete their degrees tuition-free.
Additional changes include guaranteed spots at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center for all nursing students and the creation of a centralized office to assist students in securing internships. Carter also announced that the university will permanently implement a winter recess for all academic staff, ensuring faculty receive a break around the winter holidays.
Carter said the new incentives are designed to address concerns about the rising cost of college and to encourage graduates to remain in Ohio. He acknowledged the challenges facing higher education nationally.
"Higher education is going through a transformation right now, and some of it is pretty tough," Carter said.
He noted that while many university presidents are shrinking programs, imposing hiring freezes and considering cuts to athletics, Ohio State remains financially stable despite pressures such as canceled grants. Carter said the university has maintained all 14,000 of its research positions.
