Taylor Swift Sets New Sales Records as 'The Life of a Showgirl' Sells 2.7 Million Copies
Taylor Swift’s latest album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” has sold 2.7 million copies in the United States on its first day of release, Oct. 3, according to initial reports to the data tracking firm Luminate. That figure, which includes both physical and digital album purchases across all versions, marks Swift’s largest sales week to date and the second-largest single-week sales total for any album since Luminate began electronically tracking data in 1991.
The only album to surpass that number in a single week is Adele’s “25,” which sold 3.378 million copies in its opening week in 2015.
“The Life of a Showgirl” also set a modern-era record for the most vinyl copies sold in a single week, with 1.2 million units sold as of the album’s first day. This breaks Swift’s own previous record for vinyl sales, set in 2024 when “The Tortured Poets Department” sold 859,000 copies on vinyl in its debut week.
All sales, streaming and airplay data in this story are U.S.-only and are provided by Luminate, which powers Billboard’s charts. Updated first-week sales and streaming activity for the album will be reported by Luminate in the coming days.
Swift announced “The Life of a Showgirl” on Aug. 12, with preorders opening on her official webstore soon after. The album was released in multiple formats, including a streaming edition, standard CD, vinyl, and digital download. In total, 23 different physical versions of the album are available, including 12 CDs, eight vinyl LPs, two deluxe CD boxed sets (each containing branded apparel and a CD), and a cassette. Four editions are exclusive to Target stores in the U.S., while the remaining 17 physical configurations are exclusive to Swift’s webstore and were offered during limited preorder windows.
The digital download editions include a standard version available from all participating retailers and an iTunes Store-exclusive version that includes a short bonus video. Individual tracks from the album are not available for separate purchase.
Of the 2.7 million copies sold on release day, the number includes over-the-counter purchases, digital downloads, and preorders of physical and digital albums fulfilled on Oct. 3.
After just one day on sale, “The Life of a Showgirl” is the top-selling album of 2025 in the U.S., surpassing the 520,000 sold by The Weeknd’s “Hurry Up Tomorrow” through the week ending Sept. 25.
Swift’s last studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” was released with 19 different physical versions (nine CDs, six vinyl LPs, and four cassettes) and two digital download versions.
With 2.7 million copies sold after one day, “The Life of a Showgirl” becomes just the eighth Swift album to sell at least 1 million copies in a single week. Previous Swift albums to achieve this milestone include “The Tortured Poets Department,” “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” “Midnights,” “Reputation,” the original “1989,” “Red,” and “Speak Now.” No other artist has achieved eight different albums with single-week sales of 1 million or more copies since 1991.
In total, there have been 27 instances of albums selling at least 1 million copies in a single week in the modern era, with Adele’s “25” accomplishing the feat in three separate weeks.
The current tracking week for “The Life of a Showgirl” ends Thursday, Oct. 9, and final first-week sales figures are expected to be reported Sunday, Oct. 12. If the album debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart dated Oct. 18, it would mark Swift’s 15th No. 1 album, giving her the most No. 1 albums among solo artists. She is currently tied with Drake and Jay-Z at 14 each. Only The Beatles, with 19 No. 1s, have more since the chart began regular weekly publication in 1956.
All 14 of Swift’s full-length studio albums and re-recorded projects from 2008’s “Fearless” through 2024’s “The Tortured Poets Department” have debuted at No. 1.
The Billboard 200 ranks the most popular albums in the U.S. each week based on multi-metric consumption, as measured in equivalent album units and compiled by Luminate.
