Charli XCX Embraces Rock Sound for Upcoming Album and Teases Bold Reinvention

Charli XCX is shifting from dance music to rock for her next album, according to a British Vogue cover story published Tuesday.

The British pop singer, known for her provocative style and electronic sound, shared few details about her upcoming eighth album, which the magazine described as a "rock reinvention."

"For me, it's fun to flip the form," Charli XCX told the magazine. "We know there's gonna be people who are bothered by it, but that's fine."

Charli XCX said recording another club-oriented album would have been difficult. "If I'd made another album that felt more dance-leaning, it would have felt really hard, really sad," she said. "We were doing our version of analogue, which is so silly and funny, but putting it through our lens, and making sure that nothing felt too macho, was important."

She added that the process made her "crave something opposite. Getting back to something more internal is really nice, and really sort of quiet."

Details, including a release date and album title, have not been announced. British Vogue reports the album is still in progress and will be released by Atlantic Records. Charli XCX said she is working with longtime collaborators A.G. Cook and Finn Keane, also known as Easyfun. She has also wiped her social media accounts, leaving only a few posts, a link to a new Instagram account and a charcoal gray profile picture.

Charli XCX's previous album, "Brat," was released in 2022. Since then, she has completed a world tour and won her first Grammy Award. She also starred in and produced "The Moment," a mockumentary about a fictionalized version of the making of the "Brat" tour and the Brat Summer phenomenon. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and featured appearances by Kylie Jenner, Alexander Skarsg rd and Rachel Sennott.

In addition, Charli XCX contributed music to Emerald Fennell's adaptation of "Wuthering Heights" and to the thriller "Mother Mary," starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel. She stars in "Erupcja," a film opening Friday, in which she visits a friend in Poland during a volcanic eruption.

Charli XCX is also scheduled to headline Lollapalooza in Chicago and Outside Lands in San Francisco this summer.
