Miley Cyrus Celebrates 20 Years of Hannah Montana with Selena Gomez and Chappell Roan

Miley Cyrus' "Hannah Montana" 20th anniversary special premiered Tuesday, March 24, on Disney+, featuring appearances by Chappell Roan and Selena Gomez.

The special included Cyrus revisiting the set and music of "Hannah Montana," the Disney Channel series that launched her to stardom in 2006. At one point, Roan, who has cited the show as an inspiration for her own music career, joined Cyrus on set.

"You literally walked so I could run," Roan, a Missouri native, told Cyrus. "What I do on stage, where I can just go on a red carpet and be ... that was because you took a lot of the heat for that in 2012, 2013. I don't have to deal with that as much because you really - the world took it out on you."

Roan was referencing a viral moment in 2024 when she confronted a photographer at the MTV Video Music Awards, which Cyrus, in the special, said left her "gagged." Cyrus also said she was moved hearing Roan watched "Hannah Montana" as a child.

"I'm so grateful that I get to be a part of this," Roan said. "I grew up watching 'Hannah' at my grandparents' house."

Gomez, who appeared in several episodes of "Hannah Montana" as pop star Mikayla, also visited the set. She and Cyrus discussed their shared beginnings on the Disney Channel.

"I thought that this would overwhelm me more, and I would feel super emotional and not be able to control the tears, but it's actually been really fun," Cyrus told Gomez.

Gomez recalled wearing "blue weird makeup" for one episode, saying, "I remember feeling ugly in that, because we're, like, 15, and I want to feel pretty, and I'm like, 'Ugh.'" She laughed about how "mean" their characters were to each other, adding, "I don't think they would get away saying half of that now."

Gomez also told Cyrus, "The whole 'Meet Miley' album was, like, my life. You created culture, babe."

The special featured Cyrus performing songs from the franchise, including "The Climb" and "This Is the Life." She also sat for an interview with "Call Her Daddy" host Alex Cooper, spoke with her parents, Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus, and reminisced about moments such as Taylor Swift's cameo in the "Hannah Montana" movie and touring with The Jonas Brothers.
