The 12-year-old victim that was fatally shot near Atlanta's Atlantic Station mall on Saturday night has been identified as Zyion Charles. The family confirmed the boy's identity to WSB-TV.
"Over here, we have continued to say recently that Atlanta is a group project," Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said in a Sunday press conference. "When a 12-year-old dies in our city on our ... then the whole village has a responsibility, and the whole village is impacted."
The shooting happened around 8 p.m. after an unruly group of young people was escorted by security and off-duty Atlanta police officers. The crowd moved over to the 17th Street bridge when shots rang out between two groups.
Five people were injured in the shooting and were taken to area hospitals. One of them was listed in critical condition.
Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said the teens were known to each other. Some of the teens were Atlanta public school students, while others were from nearby counties.
No suspects have been identified, and the shooting is still under investigation. Police are asking for the public's help by submitting any photos or videos they might have captured from the shooting.
