One person was killed and five others injured in a shooting near the Atlantic Station mall on Saturday night, according to Atlanta police.
Police said late Saturday that the shooting occurred after a group of people ranging in age from roughly 15 to 21 was escorted from the property. The group was removed from the area by mall security and off-duty APD officers for unruly behavior and curfew violations.
The group moved over to the 17th Street bridge, and shots rang out shortly after 8 p.m. According to Atlanta police homicide coordinator Lt. Germaine Dearlove, a deceased male was found at the scene. Several other people were transported to local hospitals.
On Sunday, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said the victim was just a 12-year-old boy. Several others injured in the shooting are Atlanta Public Schools students, and at least one is listed in critical condition.
Dearlove said shots might have been fired from two different groups, and no suspects have been identified. A witness told WXIA that as many as 30 rounds might have been fired.
The shooting is still under investigation, and APD is currently working on obtaining surveillance footage from businesses and residences in the area.
The shooting comes at one of the busiest times of the year for Atlantic Station, with the holiday shopping season officially underway.
