Simone Biles Cleans House At U.S. Gymnastics National Championship

Simone Biles posted a top score of 60.1 during the opening night of the U.S. Championships on Friday. (Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports)Simone Biles is making history again. The star gymnast recently competed at the U.S. National Championship  for women’s gymnastics on the weekend of Aug. 17, where she won five gold medals. The new accomplishment makes Biles the third female gymnast to sweep the highest medal in all events in the sport’s entire history.
Biles reportedly took first place in the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise, and in the all-around. It is the first time a gymnast has swept all gold medals since Dominique Dawes made history in 1994. Before that, Joyce Tanac became “the first” in 1969.
HanesInkBiles’ competing costume was also significant. The athlete donned a mint and teal leotard in solidarity with the Me Too movement and the countless female gymnasts who stood up against sexual abuse and misconduct. “It is for the survivors, and I stand with all of them,” she said of her decision to wear the leotard. In Jan. 2018, Biles was one of many who came forward to accuse U.S. Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar of sexual abuse. Nassar was found guilty and sentenced to 40 to 175 on 10 counts of sexual assault of minors.
This marks Biles second competition since the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. She is looking to return to the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020. Check out footage from Biles’ performance at the National Championship above.
