Southwest Airlines is modifying its policy regarding passengers who require more than one seat. Starting January 27, passengers who cannot fit into a single seat will need to purchase a second adjacent seat. However, they can apply for a refund if the flight isn't fully booked. Previously, Southwest allowed such passengers to buy two seats for the price of one if the flight had available space.
The new guidelines encourage passengers to assess their needs and make necessary arrangements in advance. Airline staff will also evaluate if a passenger requires an additional seat for safety reasons. This change coincides with Southwest's transition to assigned seating, moving away from its traditional open seating policy based on check-in order.
Additionally, passengers traveling with partner carriers who need extra space must purchase an additional, non-refundable seat. These policy updates, including the introduction of baggage fees, have sparked mixed reactions. While some see it as a necessary adjustment for fairness, others believe it detracts from Southwest's reputation for being accommodating to plus-sized passengers.
