Anika Nilles Brings Playful Energy to Rush Tour Reviving Band Spirit and Legacy

DETROIT - If anyone questioned how well Anika Nilles has fit in with Rush, her recent onstage pranks during the Fifty Something tour have provided a clear answer.

Nilles joined bandmates Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson after a demanding year of rehearsals. The tour marks Rush's return to the stage 11 years after the late Neil Peart retired, a moment many thought would be the end of the band.

With Nilles on drums and Loren Gold on keyboards, Rush has found new energy, and Nilles' playful antics on stage show the group's renewed spirit.

In a recent video from the band's Aug. 26 show at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Nilles leaves Lee and Lifeson holding the final chord of "Working Man." She steps away, eats some chips, and offers them to her bandmates. When they decline, she puts the bag away and tries to catch them off-guard by hitting her final notes unexpectedly, but they are ready for her.

YouTuber Rush101 compiled at least 10 of these pranks in a video. In one clip, Nilles reacts with a confused expression as Lee and Lifeson make faces at each other. In another, she snaps a selfie with the trio. At another show, she reads a newspaper while the final chord rings out. She even appeared in costume as The Bag, a character familiar to longtime Rush fans.
