Smashing Pumpkins Return to Lollapalooza Chicago After 30 Years With Pumpkinpalooza Celebration

Smashing Pumpkins will headline Lollapalooza in their hometown of Chicago for the first time in more than 30 years. The band will perform Friday night, July 31, on the Bud Light stage in Grant Park.

Their last headlining slot at Lollapalooza was in 1994, during the festival's original touring years. That lineup included the Beastie Boys, George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars, The Breeders, A Tribe Called Quest, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, L7, Green Day and others.

To mark their return, the Smashing Pumpkins are hosting "Pumpkinpalooza," a multi-day celebration. Events include a sold-out underplay show at the 2,500-capacity Riviera Theatre in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood on Wednesday, July 29. From Wednesday through Friday, the band will run a merchandise pop-up at 900 S. Wabash Ave. from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., just blocks from Grant Park.

Throughout the weekend, fans can visit Madame Zuzu's Celestial Lounge, a traveling version of Billy Corgan and Chlo Mendel's Highland Park teahouse. The lounge will offer matcha, vinyl, exclusive merchandise and other items. The Aviary cocktail lounge will serve a limited-edition Infinite Mellons cocktail, made with shochu, litchi blossom, honeydew melon and cantaloupe.

"As a Chicagoan, born and raised, I take great pride in contributing to our city's immense and colorful cultural fabric," singer and guitarist Billy Corgan said in a statement. "This year's already historic Lollapalooza is a chance to make new memories, new friends and have a bit of Midwest fun, too, as only we might."

The Smashing Pumpkins are scheduled for a 90-minute set at the north end of Grant Park on Friday. Charli XCX will perform at the same time on the T-Mobile stage, more than a mile away. Other acts that day include Major Lazer, Lil Uzi Vert, Yungblud, Zara Larsson, Suki Waterhouse and Freddie Gibbs.

After Lollapalooza, the band will launch The Rats in the Cage tour this fall. The tour will feature two sets: one marking the 30th anniversary of their 1995 album "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," and another featuring hits, deep cuts and fan favorites. The tour opens Sept. 30 at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio.
