Microsoft Flight Simulator Sim Update 5 Nears Release After Final Beta Polishing
Microsoft Flight Simulator fans waiting for Sim Update 5 may need to keep the parking brake set just a little longer. In the latest April 23rd, 2026 MSFS Weekly Briefing, the Microsoft Flight Simulator team says the update is now in its final polishing stage, with one more pre-release test build planned for public beta participants before the update rolls out more broadly.
The update had previously been targeted for release during the week of April 20 through April 24, 2026, across PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 5 Pro, according to Microsoft's April development update. However, the latest briefing indicates the team is taking extra time to resolve last-minute issues before pushing Sim Update 5 out of the hangar.
One of the key items still being checked is the Oversized Cargo Rating, which was previously referred to as the Heavy Cargo Rating. Microsoft says it is validating that this career-mode feature is ready to go. For MSFS 2024 pilots building their virtual aviation careers, that rating could become an important piece of the progression puzzle, especially for those looking to move into larger and more specialized cargo operations.
Another item holding short of the runway is an issue involving AMD frame generation, which was discovered by community testers during the optional public beta. Microsoft says the team is working to resolve the issue before final release.
This is exactly where public beta testing earns its coffee. Bugs found by the community before a full release can help prevent a wider rollout from turning into a turbulence report. It may not be the most glamorous part of flight simulation development, but it is the kind of behind-the-scenes systems check that can make a big difference once the update reaches the full player base.
The broader Sim Update 5 release is being closely watched by the MSFS community, particularly as Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 continues to mature following its launch. Microsoft's recent development updates have also shifted into a refreshed format, with the regular blogs now branded as Weekly Briefings that provide high-level news, marketplace updates, community notes, and screenshot challenge highlights.
For now, virtual pilots can expect one more beta build before Sim Update 5 lands publicly. No exact release date has been confirmed in the latest briefing, but Microsoft's language suggests the update is close, just waiting on a final round of bug-squashing, cargo-rating validation, and AMD-related polishing.
In other words: the aircraft is fueled, the clearance is coming, but the crew is still checking the annunciator panel.
