Power Outage Disrupts Operations at Denver International Airport During Busy Travel Push

Travelers at Denver International Airport were met with a rough start on Wednesday after a widespread power outage disrupted operations across one of the nation's busiest hubs.

According to airport officials, the incident began around 9:20 a.m., knocking out power to several key areas inside DEN. While some service came back quickly, several critical systems remained offline for about an hour, including the airport's train system that moves passengers from the terminal to the concourses. The result was a terminal scene that looked less like a normal travel day and more like a holding pattern with shoes on.

The outage also triggered a temporary FAA ground stop, halting incoming traffic for a little over an hour. Power was restored just after 11 a.m., the ground stop was lifted around 11:30 a.m., and airport officials said operations had largely returned to normal by about noon.

The cause appears to have originated off the terminal floor and inside the power grid. Reports say the outage was tied to equipment failure at an Xcel Energy substation serving the airport. Xcel said crews were in the process of energizing a new transformer when a piece of equipment shut off, causing the substation to lose power. The utility says the exact root cause is still under investigation.

Passengers felt the impact immediately. Crowds stacked up in the terminal as access to the concourses slowed to a crawl, train platforms jammed, and security lines backed up. Some witness reports said passengers were temporarily unable to board waiting aircraft, while other basic services inside the terminal were also affected.

By later in the day, the disruption had spread across the airport's flight schedule. Reports showed more than 500 delayed flights and 9 cancellations by mid-to-late afternoon, a reminder that even a relatively short outage at a major hub can ripple through the system long after the lights come back on.

For Denver-based travelers and crews, it was another example of how dependent large airport operations are on a handful of critical systems, especially train access, terminal power, and real-time coordination with the FAA and airlines.

Sky Blue Radio will keep an eye on any updates as investigators work to pin down exactly what failed and whether any longer-term infrastructure fixes may follow.
