Michael Chavis hit a bloop single that dropped in shallow right field to score Ke'Bryan Hayes in the bottom of the 10th inning for a walk-off win over the Chicago Cubs. The celebration was tempered when Hayes stayed down for a minute after sliding headfirst into home plate to score the winning run before getting up slowly. He collided with catcher Willson Contreras in front of the plate, and Contreras fell downward onto Hayes' left shoulder.
Chavis hit the tying home run in the eighth inning, made a run-saving throw to home in the top of the 10th and then delivered the winning hit as the Pirates beat the Cubs, 8-7, on Thursday afternoon before 14,529 at PNC Park.
