Snoop Dogg's Daughter Cori Broadus Reveals That She Tried To Take Her Life, Spreads Mental Health Awareness
Snoop Dogg's daughter Cori Broadus-also known as CHOC-has opened up about her struggles with mental health.
Cori Broadus made her revelation via Instagram this past weekend (Saturday, May 15th). Her post showed her and her partner, Wayne Deuce, enjoying an outdoor picnic, and she opened up about her situation in her caption. After explaining that she actually attempted to commit suicide, she stated:
"...you and my family really give me a purpose to live & helped me realize life is much more than materialistic things & you gotta just keep pushing through the b******t."
Shortly after the post, Cori Broadus went on Instagram Live to provide additional context to her revelation, stating:
"Just because my dad is who he is, that doesn't mean I don't get sad. That doesn't mean I don't want things or I don't feel a way"
Cori then discusses how her childhood experiences with sickness and colorism contributed to her negative self-image and depression, claiming:
"I think it starts from my childhood. I grew up with two light-skinned brothers...I was the only chocolate one. I was overweight, I got lupus at six... And that just automatically just messed with my health. I've always been sad, I've always been depressed, 'cause I feel like I've just been through a lot. Like, as far as my sickness and not knowing if it was cancer or if it was lupus and then finding out it was lupus [at six years old]."
"When I first got lupus my face used to peel and my hair was falling out, and even just me being dark like people looked at me like I was an alien, like I was a monster."
At this point, Cori began to discuss how years of feeling different on account of her illness, her body, and her complexion fueled her suicidal thoughts, saying:
"At 13 I was ready to die. Like, just so sad crying to my mom like 'Mom, I'm so ugly. Why did you have me? Why do I look like this? Why don't I look like my brothers? Why?... I hated everything about me."
She continued, reverberating a central message within her story:
Just because you have money, and just because you're able to do certain things that people can't doesn't mean that you don't have a heart, you don't have a mind, you don't have a soul. I go through it just like everybody else.
