We Remember. We Honor. We Will Never Forget.

Today, we pause to remember September 11, 2001 - a day that forever changed our nation and the lives of millions of people around the world.

On that morning, 2,977 lives were lost in New York City, at the Pentagon and aboard Flight 93. Behind that number were thousands of individual lives, families, friendships, dreams and futures that were changed forever.

We remember those who left home that morning never knowing it would be their final goodbye. We remember the families who endured unimaginable loss, the survivors who carried the memories of that day forward, and the generations that have grown up hearing their stories.

Honoring Those Who Answered the Call

In the midst of tragedy came extraordinary acts of courage.

Firefighters, police officers, paramedics, first responders and ordinary citizens ran toward danger to help people they had never met. Many made the ultimate sacrifice while trying to save others.

Their service did not end when September 11 was over. First responders, recovery workers and volunteers continued working at the affected sites for weeks and months afterward, with many carrying the physical and emotional consequences of that service for years to come.

Today, we honor all of them.

Remembering How We Came Together

September 11 is remembered for devastating loss, but the days that followed also showed the extraordinary capacity people have for compassion.

Communities came together. Neighbors helped neighbors. Strangers comforted one another. People donated blood, volunteered, supported grieving families and searched for ways to help however they could.

In one of the nation's darkest moments, countless acts of kindness, bravery and humanity offered light.

That spirit is also part of what we remember.

Keeping Their Stories Alive

Twenty-five years have now passed since September 11, 2001.

An entire generation has grown up without a personal memory of that day. For many younger Americans, September 11 is something they know through photographs, videos, classrooms and the stories shared by parents, grandparents and those who lived through it.

That makes remembrance even more important.

We have a responsibility to continue telling the stories of those who were lost, those who survived, those who served and those whose lives were forever changed.

May we always remember those we lost.

May we always honor those who served.

May we never take for granted the people we love or the moments we are fortunate enough to share.
