Michael Jackson Biopic 'Michael' Blocked From Golden Globes Musical/Comedy Category
Shake-Up"Michael" Blocked From Musical/Comedy Race, Pushing Jaafar Jackson Into a Tougher Drama FieldThe Michael Jackson biopic Michael may be one of the biggest films of the year, but its road through awards season just took an unexpected turn.
The Golden Globes awards committee has rejected Lionsgate's attempt to compete with Michael in the Musical or Comedy category for the 2027 Golden Globe Awards. Unless that decision is successfully appealed, the blockbuster will instead have to compete as a Drama.
It's a decision that is already creating conversation, especially considering the film centers on arguably the most influential pop entertainer of all time. Why Isn't a Michael Jackson Movie Considered a Musical?
The issue comes down to how the Golden Globes defines a musical.Having a soundtrack packed with legendary songs isn't necessarily enough. Under the awards organization's rules, songs in a musical must be used alongside dialogue to help advance the story.
That distinction is important for Michael. Although the movie recreates performances and music from Jackson's career, the awards committee reportedly determined that those musical sequences don't meet the requirements necessary to classify the entire film as a musical. In other words, a movie can be about music without technically being considered a musical under awards rules.
Jaafar Jackson Now Faces a Different Awards RaceThe decision could have an even bigger impact on Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson's nephew, who portrays the King of Pop.
Because the Golden Globes separates its lead acting categories between Drama and Musical or Comedy, Jaafar would also move into the Drama actor race if the classification stands. That could create a significantly different path toward a nomination, with Michael potentially facing some of the year's most prominent dramatic films.
The ruling doesn't have the same effect on supporting performers such as Colman Domingo and Nia Long, who portray Joe and Katherine Jackson. Golden Globe supporting acting categories aren't separated between Drama and Musical/Comedy.
Musical Biopics Have Faced This Question BeforeMichael isn't the first music-centered biopic to land in the Drama category.Films including Bohemian Rhapsody, Elvis and A Complete Unknown have also competed as dramas, despite focusing heavily on legendary recording artists and their music. Earlier films such as Ray and Walk the Line competed in the Musical or Comedy field before the Golden Globes tightened its interpretation of what qualifies as a musical.
That history makes the decision involving Michael less unusual than it might initially sound.Still, when the subject is Michael Jackson, it's easy to understand why fans might question how a film filled with the music and performances of the King of Pop doesn't qualify as a musical.
Lionsgate Still Has an OptionThe category decision isn't necessarily the final word.Lionsgate has until October 31 to appeal the ruling and ask the Golden Globes awards committee to reconsider. If the decision remains in place, Michael and Jaafar Jackson will move forward in the Drama categories as Hollywood's awards season begins heating up.
The 84th Golden Globe Awards nominations are scheduled to be announced December 7, 2026, with the ceremony taking place January 10, 2027 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.
The Konnected Take
Whether it's labeled a musical or a drama, Michael has already proven that the King of Pop's cultural reach remains enormous. The category controversy also raises an interesting question about modern music biopics. When an artist's songs are inseparable from the story of their life, where exactly does biography end and musical storytelling begin?
For Jaafar Jackson, the answer now matters beyond semantics. Competing in Drama could change the entire complexion of his Golden Globes campaign. But one thing hasn't changed: Michael Jackson remains a conversation starter decades after changing music, dance and popular culture forever. What do you think?
Should a Michael Jackson biopic be considered a Musical, or did the Golden Globes make the right call by placing Michael in Drama?
