We had lots of ideas that were almost ready for the world to see and hear but we just needed one more look at it to make sure that it was ready. We spun our wheels about when to launch our online leadership course and did we need cards or not and if we did were they ready. Then came the " Cult of Done" it pushed us to shift our thinking about how and when we share things with the world. Of course we still get stuck sometimes and make mistakes ( there are probably a few in this Blog!) but we have got things done and have a go to when we get stuck. It is very freeing to "do" rather than be stuck in the worry of "what if's" We hope that you will you will find " the Cult of Done" useful in helping you shift to action!42117Action, fighting procrastination, lessons learnedblogs/4-2015/42117-action-fighting-procr-s.jpgrb21 National Meetinghttps://www.blackvibes.com/features/blogs/shiftingnorms-readiness-shifting-norms-leadership-188034/features/blogs/shiftingnorms-readiness-shifting-norms-leadership-188034/Posted by shiftingnorms0https://www.blackvibes.com/features/blogs/shiftingnorms-readiness-shifting-norms-leadership-188034/#commentsWed, 1 Apr 2015 22:04 GMTNikki and I are at the Ready by 21 National Meeting in New Orleans this week and are connecting with a lot of change agents we haven't seen in years. It's great to be around those who share memorable learning and growing moments with us as we grow the Youth Development Field. There's a lot to be said when the Youth Development Field comes together, with their funders and policy makers, to talk about strategies that are and are not working. This week the question is focused on "youth readiness" and authorities are asking "ready for what?" We have data that says young people ought to be in quality programs to be ready. We have data that says programs need to be relevant and culturally responsive to meet the needs of youth and families in neighborhoods we serve. We have data that says relationships matter. So my question to the field is "Are WE ready? Are WE prepared? Are WE equipped to support youth readiness?" Too many organizations lack the funding to provide adequate training for staff. Too many organizations settle for "good enough" once adult/youth ratios are met. Youth Development Agencies are not willing to announce to parents, "We don't have the funding to train our staff to know how to work with your child." We have to name the reality of how we train and prepare our staff to work with your child. We have to make training the Youth Development Field "to be ready" a priority! When we ask about "youth readiness" we have to be realistic about how we work with youth, not just what we give them. Funders who want to fund "readiness" should be including livable wages for direct service facilitators to attend quality trainings and opportunities to grow their skills. A $30K curriculum on XYZ means nothing if the staff don't know how to work with youth. Let's shift the readiness norms, state the truth and create change. Let's fund high quality staff development opportunities.41616readiness, shifting norms, leadership, youth developmentblogs/4-2015/41616-shiftingnorms-readine-s.jpgHit the Decks!https://www.blackvibes.com/features/blogs/shiftingnorms-shift-decks-leadership-youth-development-152404/features/blogs/shiftingnorms-shift-decks-leadership-youth-development-152404/Posted by shiftingnorms0https://www.blackvibes.com/features/blogs/shiftingnorms-shift-decks-leadership-youth-development-152404/#commentsSun, 29 Mar 2015 15:00 GMTI often get asked to facilitate trainings on behavior management. Typically someone shares the challenges with "their" kids and how "the staff" just don't know what to do when the kids "act up." I usually have to bite my tongue long enough to get the training on the calendar and then share my own thoughts on what behavior management means to me. You can't manage someone else's behavior. Behavior management is about staff and facilitators learning how to manage their own behavior...how we show up, even when it's hard. There are effective strategies to use for setting youth up for success so they are engaged, challenged at the right level and are having a good time. Using the right strategies at the right time also provides a similar experience for staff. We should be engaged, challenged at the right level and have a good time when we are working alongside youth. Nikki and I created Shift Decks to meet this need. Just because agencies don't have time or resources to provide trainings for our staff doesn't mean we aren't responsible for training our staff and getting them prepared and ready to work with kids. It means we have to give leaders opportunities to learn and grow their skills in the moment. James, a Youth Development Superhero from School's Out Washington says "When it hits the fan, I hit the deck!" Two Shift Decks are available for leaders to practice being their best selves in challenging moments. Whether it's a facilitation struggle or a stuck conversation, these Shift Decks will help you move through a challenge, while practicing your leadership skills, so you can Grow, Thrive and Challenge the Status Quo. Check our website to find out more about the decks and how you can use them to manage your behavior, move through challenges and shift norms in your programs.41633shift decks, leadership, youth developmentblogs/4-2015/41633-shift-decks-leadershi-s.jpgPlanning with Accountabilityhttps://www.blackvibes.com/features/blogs/shiftingnorms-shift-decks-leadership-youth-development-1483144/features/blogs/shiftingnorms-shift-decks-leadership-youth-development-1483144/Posted by shiftingnorms0https://www.blackvibes.com/features/blogs/shiftingnorms-shift-decks-leadership-youth-development-1483144/#commentsMon, 23 Mar 2015 15:14 GMTHow do you grow your coaching skills?
