Tanyka Owens, born and raised in San Francisco Ca. She attended City College of San Francisco and participated on the track and field team. Then graduated from California State University of Los Angeles with a Bachelor Degree in Communication Studies-Broadcasting Radio and Television. She also received two Associate Degrees from EPIC Bible College in Christian and Ministerial Studies. Currently, she is working on her certification as an American Sign Language Interpreter (ASL). She is a single parent to a lovely seventeen year old daughter name Chantel. Just like her mom, she has become passionate for the deaf community. For the past four years, she is still very passionate for teaching and helping bridge the gap between deaf and hearing people at all levels.

Hey Guys!! My name is Imani! I took ASL for my foreign language class in high school and got hooked ever since! My teacher actually was the one who told me I should pursue interpreting as a career! So after graduating high school I took the steps to make that happen, and graduated from USF with the major Deaf studies. ASL is and will always be my passion!

I think learning ASL or any sign language for that matter is crucial. We often think Deafness is far from us, when in reality, it's really next door neighbors with us. Anyone can become Deaf or experience some degree of hearing loss at anytime for any reason. Wouldn't it make sense to be prepared ? Not saying that YOU will eventually have hearing loss, but you never know if it'll be your friend, your aunt, your cousin, your mom... you just never know There's so many Deaf people we may encounter, but have no idea that they're Deaf. How so? Well, because unfortunately, as people, we only focus on ourselves. ASL is the 2nd most use language in the US (some sources say 3rd, but the DEAF sources say 2nd lol). Who is KalGhani?

KalGhani is a very unique brand ! The name actually came about from brainstorming with one of my bestfriends,Shelita aka Lita, on many fun names that started with "K". I actually really wanted my brand to be named "Kali" and then lita said,"oouuu what about KALGHANI"... As soon as she said the name I knew that was ITTTT (HUGE shoutout to her).. From swimwear to Sign Language, KalGhani was made from the love and passion for art! In addition to designing swimwear, I have a B.A in Deaf studies. I am mostly known for doing insane,eye dropping,cool,hip and creative Sign Language videos via IG @KalGhani. This made me come up with the idea to make a app where I can share my knowledge and love for ASL in a fun way. Hope you all enjoy my app.. IM REALLLLLLLY EXCITED for you to learn !!!!! You should always use your dominant hand when signing ! Unless the signs requires two hands then it is acceptable to use both hands ( of course ) but other than that ALWAYS USE YOUR DOMINANT HAND:) side note; if you're ambidextrous then pick a dominant hand ! yay let's sign

Let's take a look at some of the more surprising facts about Deaf culture and how it differs from hearing culture." -Deaf Culture is not universal While American Sign Language is used in the United States and Canada, most countries have their own distinct sign languages. Just as American Sign Language is unrelated to spoken English, the sign languages of other countries have their own unique histories separate from the origins and histories of their countries' respective spoken languages. -Look at Face not hands, when communicating If you watch Deaf people sign, you'll notice that they look at each other's faces, not hands, when communicating. People who are learning to sign often fixate on the signer's hands, which looks unnatural and can hinder effective communication. This is because facial expressions are just as important for communication in sign language as using the hands and can have a huge impact on the meaning that is being conveyed. -Getting someones attention To get someone's attention, Deaf people might tap someone on the shoulder. Or, they might bang or tap on a table so that the vibrations cause everyone at the table to look toward the source of the vibrations. In a large group or classroom setting, flashing the lights off and on is a common way to get everyone's attention. It's rude to wave your hands right in front of a Deaf person's face to get their attention. Just gently tap them on the shoulder instead. It's ok to wave your hand, though, if you're too far away for a shoulder tap.

They may strive to identify themselves with hearing people, regard their hearing loss solely in medical terms. ...
