We would like to shine our spotlight on a Lead DJ of ours. Meet Derek! "The success lies within the person, not the job" is a quote that encapsulates Derek as a person and a DJ. Derek started DJing at 16. One year later, he DJ'd his first wedding. The quote he lives by is represented so well by this occurrence. Whether it was his first wedding at 16 or one of the many weddings, events and parties he has DJ'd since, he looks at it as a chance to succeed. Derek bought into a company while living in Michigan. His life and desire for warm weather brought him to Charlotte. His dedication was so strong that he drove back and forth to DJ jobs that had been booked prior to his move. After moving to the area, Derek met Vinny Esposito and Joe Verde at a 5K event. He introduced himself and soon became part of the Split Second family. Derek loved the fact that Split Second had such a large staff. He says, "With a large staff, you're exposed to more ideas and different styles." He likes that the company has the security blanket to be versatile and match the DJs to the right clients and vice versa. Being from Michigan, Derek did not know what beach music was. Moving to Charlotte proved to be enlightening. Living in a melting pot area such as Charlotte is very much like what one might experience while DJing. Derek reminisces on all of the different types of people he has been able to meet, cultures he has been able to learn, and unique weddings he has been a part of. He is enthralled by the different flavors everyone brings to each unique event. Derek knows the art of DJing from being the actual DJ to working behind the scene. His love for the job keeps him going! Derek brings a tremendous amount of energy to each event. Having lived elsewhere, being a part of a team of diverse DJs and his love for learning, Derek has a vast knowledge of music. Naturally, he is detailed so when it comes to preparing for a wedding or an event, he is able to bring his best. He makes it a practice to meet with each client. He embraces the vision they have. He is able to take their vision and help make their dream day come to fruition. He does not only take their suggestions but like to spend the meeting getting to know them and what is important to the couple. When Derek is not DJing he is hanging with his family in Mooresville. His dedication goes beyond the DJ booth. He also enjoys coaching. He has coached high school sports since he was in his 20s. He still coaches softball, basketball and baseball. Having kids provided him with more of a reason to coach, and now he loves being involved with his children's teams. Whether it is coaching his children, DJing a high-end wedding or a small corporate party - Derek ensures success because he brings his best, no matter the job. We are so glad Derek is a part of our SSS family!

As the leading DJ company in the Charlotte and surrounding areas, we have the opportunity to visit many amazing venues. One of our favorites is Charlotte City Club. One might assume it is one of our favorites because of the Club's unparalleled views but that only adds to our experience. We have the pleasure of working with Nathan, The Director of Private Events. Nathan and his staff make our job at the City Club much more pleasurable. Let me tell you a little more about The City Club and the man behind the private events! Charlotte City Club is located 31 floors above the city. Most people have no idea they are walking past this private club when they are uptown. Nearly every room holds a breathtaking view of the Queen City. As a member of the City Club, you are able to utilize the facility to entertain clients or strictly pleasure. The Club is ideal for the business traveler because with your membership, you are able to connect with an array of clubs, yacht clubs and country clubs around the world. Although this might seem impossible to reserve as the venue for your wedding, our friend Nathan has a way to help you out. If you do not know a member, he will arrange for you to participate in a Short-term Associate Membership. This is a membership at a reduced fee. The cost of the membership will be taken out of the price of the booking fee, which makes this very cost efficient. Nathan's professionalism, experience and hard work ensure that any type of event held at the Club will be delivered beyond expectations. That mentality is what he attributes to his success. The friendship that has developed between Vinny, Diane and Nathan has a lot to do with the similarities in the way they run a business and develop relationships. Relationships are incredibly important to both, but they realize something most people do not. It is not just about good service and meeting people; it is about building and maintaining positive relationships - going above and beyond. Vinny had the privilege of DJing Nathan's daughter's wedding a year and a half ago! Nathan is not an amateur in the industry. He lived in Wrightsville Beach for over 20 years, where he owned and ran multiple restaurants. Eleven years ago, he decided to give up the restaurants and move to Charlotte where he began his role at the City Club. Nathan is in charge of a couple hundred events a month and over 50 weddings a year. We have the pleasure of DJing quite a few of those weddings. This has curated a relationship that is special to Vinny and Diane but also our DJ's. Many of our DJ's have worked with Nathan and all of them sing his praises. Nathan is known for the relationships he has built and created, not only with Split Second but with other vendors and clients. Throughout those years, he has had the pleasure of creating relationships with clients and their families that he still runs into. It is safe to say that Nathan loves his job. On his days off, you will likely find him popping into the Club. His commute is not a bad one at after all since he lives across the street. Nathan has overseen over 440 weddings and with each wedding, he holds special memories. From a bride in her designer dress having the groomsmen cut the bottom off because it was bothering her to mothers asking him to stop their sons from getting married and calming them down with his touching and loving attitude. Nathan is perfectly equipped to handle and adjust to situations that arise. His ability to hold himself together in high stress situations is incredible. He spends time to be completely prepared, so he can keep the stress level at a minimum. If you know Nathan, you will also know that he is a perfect testament to "laughing along the way". He says life is too short not to laugh, and you can always spot him with his Starbucks coffee in hand.
