Today we honor the life and legacy of Eddie Kendricks, an iconic singer and founding member of the influential Motown group The Temptations. Born in Union Springs, Alabama, Kendricks left home at a young age for Detroit, Michigan, where he and his boyhood friend Paul Williams formed the group The Primes. A chance meeting with Otis Williams in 1961 led to the creation of The Temptations, a group that would become one of the most celebrated vocal ensembles in music history. During his decade with The Temptations, Kendricks' distinctive falsetto voice defined early hits such as "(You're My) Dream Come True," "The Way You Do the Things You Do," "Get Ready," "The Girl's Alright with Me," "I'll Be in Trouble," "Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue)," and "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)." In 1971, he left the group to pursue a solo career, achieving success with songs like "Keep on Truckin'," "Boogie Down," and "Can I." Kendricks later reunited with David Ruffin and Dennis Edwards to tour worldwide and in 1989 was inducted with The Temptations into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Eddie Kendricks passed away in 1992 after a courageous battle with lung cancer, leaving behind a legacy of soul, falsetto brilliance, and enduring influence. He is interred at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama. Visiting his gravesite is a poignant reminder of the remarkable talent that helped shape the Motown sound and inspire generations of musicians. Rest in peace, Eddie Kendricks.
