Phil Collins Remains Hopeful for Future Music Despite Health Challenges

LONDON (AP) - Phil Collins, the former Genesis frontman, says he remains optimistic about recording new music, even as he continues to face significant health challenges.In a recent interview with Zoe Ball from BBC Radio Two, Collins, 74, spoke candidly about his ongoing medical issues, which have included a series of surgeries and complications in recent years."It's an ongoing thing," Collins said. "I have a 24-hour live-in nurse to make sure I take my medication as I should. I've had challenges with my knee. Everything that could go wrong with me did go wrong. I got COVID in the hospital. My kidneys started to back up. Everything seemed to converge at the same time. I had five operations on my knee. Now, I've got a knee that works, and I can walk, albeit with assistance, crutches or whatever."Collins acknowledged that his kidney problems were likely related to alcohol consumption earlier in his life."I wasn't one of those guys that stayed up all night drinking," he said. "I'd drink during the day, but I guess I had too much of it. I was never drunk, although I fell over a couple of times. But it is just one of those things that happened, and it all caught up with me, and I spent months in hospital."Collins said he has been sober for more than two years. Combined with his recovery from knee surgery, he said he is finally starting to feel better."It's just been a difficult, interesting, frustrating last few years," he said. "It's all right now."Collins last performed in 2022 during Genesis' farewell tour. He has not played drums since 2009, after a surgery caused nerve damage, and remained seated throughout the band's final performances due to his health.While a return to touring appears unlikely, Collins said he still hopes to return to the recording studio."The things that are ahead for me would be, apart from just being back to being totally mobile and healthy, maybe go in [the studio] and have a fiddle about and see if there's more music," Collins said. "You tend to sort of feel, 'That's it, I've done that.' But you've got to start doing it to see if you can do it. Otherwise, you don't do it. So that is something on my horizon."Collins, a two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, added that he already has unfinished material that could lead to new music."I've got some things that are half-formed or were never finished, and a couple of things that were finished, which I like," he said. "So maybe life in the old dog. You'll see."

Def Leppard Releases New Single 'Rejoice' Ahead of Las Vegas Residency

Def Leppard has released a new single, "Rejoice," ahead of the band's upcoming Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace, which begins Feb. 3."This song's been an amazing journey from concept to conclusion," lead singer Joe Elliott said in a press release. "I said to [guitarist] Phil [Collen] one day, 'I've got this idea for a lyric where the narrator is at absolute rock bottom and wants to rise up to a higher level. Do you have a musical piece that might match with that?' And he said, 'As it happens, yes I do.'"Collen described the creative process, saying, "I had this riff, this idea for a song a while ago actually, so when Joe came to me I created this drum loop based with a tribal sound and it fit perfectly with this other arrangement I had. I sent it to Joe and it was like magic - he sang straight over the top of it. And that's how the song was formed."Collen added, "Then we gave it to Ronan [McHugh] who'd done a proper drum loop with different sounds. It all started gelling and just sounded like a powerful chant. We love it. It's hard rock for us. It's got a bit more of an 'oomph' than stuff we've been doing for a while. It's kind of magical.""Rejoice" is Def Leppard's first new material since their mid-2024 release "Just Like '73," a collaboration with guitarist Tom Morello. In January 2025, the band released a cover of Ben E. King's "Stand by Me," with proceeds benefiting victims of the Southern California wildfires.Def Leppard's most recent studio album, "Diamond Star Halos," was released in 2022 and featured the singles "Kick," "Take What You Want" and "Fire It Up." The group is also set to release "Diamond Star Heroes: Live From Sheffield," a live album, in 2025.In addition to the Las Vegas residency, Def Leppard will perform three shows in India in March and tour Europe during the summer of 2026."We're going to dig a little deeper in the set," Elliott told UCR regarding the residency. "There's a lot of people coming that are just there to enjoy Vegas, and we're just a side show, one of the billions that they could have chosen to go to. So they aren't going to be that interested in the deep cuts. They want the hits and then the first 10 or 12 rows, they just want the deep cuts. So you got to strike a really fine balance, which is what we're currently working on now."

George Thorogood has expanded his 2026 tour plans, adding more than a dozen new dates to his Baddest Show on Earth tour. The first leg of the tour is scheduled to begin March 6 and run through April 4.Following a brief break, Thorogood will resume the tour on May 1 in Port Chester, New York. Rush will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their 1984 album "Grace Under Pressure" with an expanded box set set for release March 13.The anniversary edition will be available in multiple formats, including a five-disc super deluxe edition with four CDs and one Blu-ray. Poison Cancels 2026 Reunion Tour Plans Amid Dispute Over Pay

Poison has canceled plans for a 2026 reunion tour after frontman Bret Michaels reportedly demanded a significantly larger share of the band's profits, according to drummer Rikki Rockett.Although the band never officially announced a tour, Poison members had discussed plans to celebrate their 40th anniversary with a series of live dates. In September 2024, Michaels told reporters that a reunion in 2026 "would make perfect sense" and described the proposed run as "the perfect 40th anniversary tour, with 40 awesome limited dates to go out, play real live hit songs and rock the world."Rockett said the tour fell through due to disagreements over compensation. "We had a great offer, I thought. But we left the table," Rockett told Page Six. "It didn't work."Rockett said he, guitarist C.C. DeVille and bassist Bobby Dall had agreed to the tour, but that Michaels requested the "lion's share" of the money-reportedly asking for a 6-to-1 split. "You just can't work that way," Rockett said. "I don't do this just for the money. I do have a love for this, absolutely. But at the same time, you don't want to go out and work really hard just to make somebody else a bunch of money."Rockett said he did not harbor resentment over the situation. "Every member of this band has given me so much privilege in life," he said. "It's like hating your parents."When asked if Poison might tour with a different singer, Rockett said it was unlikely. "It's not out of the question. But doing that is like surgery: it's the last resort," he said. "I don't want to do that. I'm not quarreling with Bret. We just didn't come to agreement. I don't like it, and I'll say that, but it's not like, 'Let's put up our dukes.' I don't think there's a better frontman for Poison."Michaels has solo tour dates scheduled in 2026. Rockett will tour next year with his side project, Rockett Mafia. He also joked that Poison could attempt a reunion in 2027, calling it "a perfect Poison folly to do a 41st anniversary tour."

"He taught me, among many other things, to trust in the moment, and I'd like to think I taught him a little bit to rely on a plan-not as a substitute for the divine moments, but as a way to lure them in a little closer."Dead & Company formed in 2015. At the time, some Grateful Dead fans questioned whether Mayer was a good fit because of his younger age and different guitar style."I guess maybe what I was really doing was showing him he could rely on me," Mayer said. "Bob took a chance on me. He staked his entire reputation on my joining a band with him. He gave me musical community; he gave me this community."In August 2025, Dead & Company marked the Grateful Dead's 60th anniversary with three concerts at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. At the time, it was not public knowledge that Weir had been diagnosed with cancer the previous month. News of Weir's illness was not made public until his death was announced Jan. 10."I know right now it's easy to feel as if time is speeding up and taking so much from us all," Mayer said. Foghat, Nazareth Announce Joint 2026 Tour Dates

Foghat and Nazareth will team up for a series of tour dates beginning in May 2026.Foghat, known for its 1970s boogie rock sound and now led by founding drummer Roger Earl, has already played more than 20 shows this year as part of its Twang & Bang tour. They do not disappoint and we're really looking forward to these shows with them. Rock Music Surged in 2025 with Record Streaming Growth and Live Tour Demand

Rock music, often labeled as "dead," showed significant growth in 2025, outpacing nearly every other genre in streaming, according to a report released by music analytics company Luminate.The global music industry recorded 5.1 trillion streams in 2025, a 9.6% increase from 2024, according to Luminate's 2025 Year-End Report.U.S. listeners streamed 1.4 trillion songs on-demand in 2025, a 4.6% rise from the previous year. However, Luminate reported that the majority of streams favored older songs, with only 43% of streams coming from music released between 2021 and 2025.Notable recent releases such as Taylor Swift's "The Life of a Showgirl" and Morgan Wallen's "I'm the Problem" each surpassed 5 million album-equivalent units-a metric combining sales and streams.Rock led genre growth in 2025 with a 6.4% increase in streaming activity."Rock is the largest growth genre this year, meaning it grew its share of the streaming pie the most," Jaime Marconette, Luminate's vice president of music insights and industry relations, told ABC News. "Though rock streaming in general leans catalog-tracks older than 18 months-the genre posted the second-highest total of new current streams this year."Rock accounted for 260.5 billion streams in 2025, up from 234.22 billion in 2024. While classic tracks continue to dominate, both longtime fans and new listeners are contributing to the genre's resurgence.Rock's popularity extends beyond streaming. According to Billboard, top-grossing rock tours in 2025 included Iron Maiden, Eagles, Metallica, Paul McCartney and Guns N' Roses, each securing high rankings and demonstrating sustained demand for live performances.Despite rock's growth, the most-streamed songs globally in 2025 remained dominated by pop, hip-hop and K-pop.

Lynyrd Skynyrd Planning Autobiography, Biopic and Possible New Music

Lynyrd Skynyrd has plans for two major projects in 2026: the band's first official autobiography and a potential film about its history, according to manager Ross Schilling. The Southern rock group may also release new music.Schilling said the band is working on its autobiography and is in discussions to create a biopic chronicling Skynyrd's early years, the 1977 plane crash that killed original lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and two other band members, and the group's continued legacy under current frontman Johnny Van Zant, Ronnie's brother."We have two or three big players interested in doing the official movie for the band," Schilling told Ultimate Classic Rock. "We think, obviously, the story is tremendous. There's probably not a better story out there in music, certainly in rock 'n' roll. We don't know if it will be a two-hour motion picture film or go to Netflix or somebody and do a six- or eight-episode series."No cast, director or release date have been announced for the possible screen adaptation. Schilling said several biographies have been written about the "Sweet Home Alabama" band, but "none by the people that were closest to it and lived it."Schilling, who has managed Lynyrd Skynyrd since 1999, recently left Vector Management to form King Duke Entertainment. He will continue to manage the group, its current frontman and the estates of the original members, the last of whom, Gary Rossington, died in 2023, according to Ultimate Classic Rock.The band's 2026 plans also include a joint tour with Foreigner, with a concert scheduled for Aug. 23 at the Broadview Stage at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, New York. Ohio High Schools Approve NIL Compensation for Student Athletes

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Member schools of the Ohio High School Athletic Association have approved a proposal allowing high school student-athletes to receive compensation for their name, image and likeness. A total of 447 schools voted in favor of the proposal, 121 schools opposed it, and 247 abstained. "We would like to thank our member schools for taking ownership of this NIL bylaw proposal," OHSAA Executive Director Doug Ute said in a statement. "Whether our schools or individuals agree with NIL at the high school level or not, the courts have spoken on this issue across the country that the NCAA and high school athletic associations cannot prevent a student-athlete from making money on their NIL." Member schools spent the past week voting on the proposal, which was introduced in October after a lawsuit was filed by Huber Heights Wayne football player Jamier Brown and his mother, Jasmine. Brown, one of the top-rated players nationally in the class of 2027 and already committed to Ohio State, is represented by an attorney who said he could receive significant financial benefits from NIL. However, under prior OHSAA rules, accepting those deals would have made him ineligible to compete. Franklin County Judge Jaiza Page recently granted a temporary restraining order against OHSAA eligibility rules that prohibited high school athletes from signing endorsement deals while maintaining amateur status. Under the new OHSAA bylaws, student-athletes are permitted to accept NIL deals as long as they do not use the name, logos, mascots, trademarks or other property of any OHSAA member school. Student-athletes are prohibited from engaging in personal branding activities during school hours or while traveling to or from any OHSAA event. They are also prohibited from accepting compensation based on athletic performance, such as for the number of points scored. A Singapore-based company has pulled its AI-powered teddy bear, Kumma, from sale after researchers from the U.S. and Canada found it could easily be prompted to discuss sexually explicit topics and provide other inappropriate advice. Kumma, sold for $99 and powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o, is manufactured in China and marketed by FoloToy. According to the Public Interest Research Group, researchers conducted test conversations with Kumma and discovered the bear not only discussed sexual topics such as spanking, BDSM, and sexual roleplay, but also elaborated with graphic detail and introduced additional sexual concepts, including inappropriate scenarios involving teachers, students, parents, and children. Imagination and Revelation Imagination is the canvas where dreams first appear, painted in colors too wild for waking life. Revelation, however, is the moment those colors refuse to fade - when the dream insists it carries truth. In this second part of the journey, I step into the tension between the two. Was my vision simply imagination, a story spun by the subconscious? Or was it revelation, a divine interruption meant to guide me forward? My imagination went running - vivid, untamed, painting scenes of betrayal, mistreatment, and rejection. It spun stories that felt so real I almost believed them. Yet even as my mind raced, a spiritual whisper reminded me: discernment is the anchor. What feels chaotic in imagination can be clarified in revelation. As Joel 2:28 declares: "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions." M tley Cr e will return to the road in 2026, more than a decade after announcing their final tour, with a 33-city North American tour called the "Return of the Carnival of Sins." The tour, led by frontman Vince Neil, is scheduled to begin July 17 in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, at the Pavilion at Star Lake and will commemorate both the 20th anniversary of their 2005-06 Carnival of Sins tour and the band's 45th anniversary. Opening acts Extreme and Tesla will join the summer-long tour, with stops planned in New York, Michigan, Ontario, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California, Utah and Washington. "Bringing back the spirit of Carnival of Sins has been a blast, and we wanted to take it even further for its 20th anniversary," the band said in a statement.
