Boyd Gaming Corp. has confirmed plans to demolish its Eastside Cannery property in east Las Vegas, which has remained closed since the statewide casino shutdown during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The 17-year-old property, which includes a 16-story hotel tower with 307 rooms, will be torn down, and Boyd is in discussions to sell the land for residential development.Boyd stated that market demand does not support reopening the facility. Since its closure, Boyd has spent over half a million dollars monthly on maintenance, utilities, IT, and security. The property was also used by community organizations and law enforcement for food distribution and training exercises during the pandemic.Boyd Gaming operates 10 locals and downtown casinos in Southern Nevada. The company has been monitoring market conditions along Boulder Highway, where it also owns Sam's Town to the north and is redeveloping the site of Joker's Wild Casino as Cadence Crossing to the south. Boyd purchased the Eastside Cannery site for $45 million in April 2024.The demolition of Eastside Cannery follows similar moves by Red Rock Resorts, which demolished Texas Station, Fiesta Rancho, and Fiesta Henderson after the pandemic shutdowns. The only major Southern Nevada casino property still shuttered from that era is the Colorado Belle in Laughlin.

Ellie Parker, executive chef at Main St. Provisions in downtown Las Vegas and a graduate of the Clark County School District, is competing in Season 24 of "Hell's Kitchen." Although born in Racine, Wisconsin, Parker has called Las Vegas home since age 7 and will represent Nevada in the competition as Gordon Ramsay searches for America's next great chef.This season, titled "Battle of the States," premiered Thursday on Fox, with Ramsay narrowing the field from 50 chefs nationwide to a top 20 who will advance in the competition.Parker described the opportunity as a dream come true, saying, "Cooking has always been my passion, but now I get the chance to showcase my skills on a national stage. Representing Las Vegas, Nevada and the incredible team at Main St. Provisions makes this journey even more special."Parker's culinary journey began early. At 12, she applied to the culinary program at Northwest Career and Technical Academy, starting her training at 13. She graduated top of her class in 2017, earning three degrees in culinary arts, baking, and pastry. Visitation to Las Vegas continued to decline in August, with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reporting 3.2 million visitors, a 6.7 percent drop compared to a year earlier. According to the Nevada Gaming Control Board, statewide gaming win rose 5.5 percent year-over-year to $1.23 billion, with Clark County up 5.3 percent to $1 billion. The Las Vegas Strip saw a 5.5 percent increase to $679.4 million, and downtown Las Vegas rose 8.3 percent to $63.2 million. This marked the 54th consecutive month with gaming win above $1 billion.Strong performances were seen in several Southern Nevada submarkets. Laughlin led with a 10.8 percent increase to $36.3 million, while the Boulder Strip and Mesquite each posted gains of more than 9 percent. Only outlying Clark County saw a slight decline.The timing of the Labor Day weekend, which included two days in August, helped boost activity, especially in Elko County, which also benefited from annual fairground events.In contrast to Las Vegas, Laughlin and Mesquite saw improved visitation. Laughlin's visitation was up 14.5 percent to 134,000, and its occupancy rate climbed to 53.7 percent. Mesquite's visitation increased 11.5 percent to 68,000, with average daily room rates jumping 22.3 percent to $88.49.While Las Vegas faced challenges in attracting visitors this summer, gaming revenue and rural destinations like Laughlin and Mesquite showed resilience, benefiting from value offerings and special events.

Terry Fator's remarkable run as a Las Vegas headliner is coming to an end. The celebrated ventriloquist, who won "America's Got Talent" in 2007, will give his final performance at The Strat Theater on Tuesday night, marking the conclusion of a 16 -year residency on the Strip.Fator shared in a statement, "Las Vegas will always be my home, and I've loved every moment performing at The Strat for fans from all over the globe." He also hinted at new ventures, including bringing his act to symphony stages, launching new television projects, and expanding his touring schedule with a fresh road show.Fator's stint at The Strat began in May 2024. The dealership's lawsuit alleges that Mayweather wrote two checks totaling the purchase price but then directed the dealer not to cash them, ultimately claiming he never intended to pay for the vehicles. The complaint states Mayweather bought the cars to display wealth on social media rather than for genuine ownership.A settlement was reached on July 24, with Mayweather agreeing to pay $1.2 million for the Mercedes-Maybach and return the other three vehicles.
