Deputies searching for missing Bartholomew County man after significant flooding

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. -- A search is underway for a missing Bartholomew County man after significant flooding affected multiple counties across central Indiana last week.
Deputies with the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office are searching for Darrell Voelz, a 62-year-old man deputies believe was staying at a cabin located along the east bank of the Driftwood River in the 5000 block of N. 250 W.
The Bartholomew County Water Rescue Team responded to the area around 3:47 p.m. on Sunday to conduct a welfare check on Voelz after dispatch received calls from concerned friends. The rescue team searched through all homes in the area before launching a secondary search at 6:05 p.m.
Three days later, BCSO performed another welfare check to locate Voelz. Deputies managed to find the cabin they believed Voelz was staying in as water levels began to recede. Preliminary information indicates the cabin appeared to catch on fire at some point during the flooding, BCSO said. Deputies believe the cabin burned down to the water level before increasing flooding levels covered it again.
Flooding remains a problem for many parts of Bartholomew County. Bartholomew County Sheriff Chris Lane shared photos Monday showing several fields, roadways and power lines that remained underwater.
As of Thursday afternoon, deputies have still not been able to locate Voelz. Anyone with information related to his possible location is asked to contact the county's Emergency Operations Center at (812) 379-1689.
