Flooding issues persist in parts of Monroe County

MONROE COUNTY, Ind. - Hoosiers in Monroe County are dealing with the impact of flooding days after severe storms and rain washed through the area.

Flood waters shut down nearly a dozen roads there. The Monroe County Emergency Management Agency said some roads are starting to open back up, while others remain closed.

EMA officials said the 11 remaining flooded roads are county roads that have a history of flooding. They're located in low-lying areas primarily near bodies of water.

As for Lake Monroe, the Department of Natural Resources said water elevation in the reservoir has reached more than twelve feet above the normal pool level, rendering several park areas inaccessible.

According to EMA, no damage caused by flooding has been reported yet, but the office is in contact with local fire departments, asking them to report on any issues they may come across.

To stay up to date on any road closures, detours and restrictions, drivers can check out the county's online "Road Closure Viewer." The county also has a list of closures.

Officials said the number one thing for drivers to keep in mind is safety. Even if a road looks passable, your car could be swept off the road by just twelve inches of water.

If you're a homeowner who's experienced any damage related to the recent round of storms, EMA officials encourage you to report it to their office by phone or email.
