Black Mother Breaks the World Record for Heaviest Raw Deadlift by a Woman (Video)
A Columbia, Maryland mother of two is making headlines after becoming a champion powerlifter and breaking the world record for the heaviest raw deadlift by a woman.
Tamara Walcott, born in the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Croix, was always heavier than her peers. Growing up, she remained active by playing sports, but her weight ballooned after moving to the states. After giving birth to her second son, Walcott says she became addicted to food, which caused her weight to reach 415 pounds. To shed the pounds, the now 39-year-old began weightlifting in 2017. She soon employed a personal trainer and began improving her skills.
"I wanted to take control of my life," Walcott shared during her Wednesday appearance on "Good Morning America."
Walcott shed over 140 pounds since her journey began, though weight loss was not her only goal. She was determined to compete in weightlifting competitions. When Walcott lifted 636 pounds in September 2021, it was a shock to even herself. That move broke the record for a woman's heaviest raw deadlift ever performed. Then in 2022, she broke her own record by lifting 639 pounds.
Walcott was featured in PEOPLE's Wednesday "Beyond the Scale" segment, which focuses on individuals who've made drastic lifestyle changes. The mentally and physically strong woman says she is hopeful that her story will motivate others to take control of their lives.
"I don't feel like I'm just lifting heavy weight anymore. I feel like I'm lifting spirits," Walcott shared.
