From Hannah Montana to pop stardom, Miley Cyrus has had no shortage ofcontroversies over the course of her career. One of both fans’ and the media’s biggest fixations with Miley over the years has been her well-documented relationship with drugs.
To this point Miley has embraced a care-free image, smoking weed on stage at MTV EMAs and releasing molly fueled party anthems. However, she seems to have turned a new corner in her life recently, announcing that she has “been sober for the past six months.”
Ethan Miller/Getty ImagesIn an interview with Variety, Miley revealed that she decided to get sober because it was necessary for her vocal cord surgery. She also added that she has been attending therapy sessions and found additional motivation to put the drugs aside from her parents.
“I did a lot of family history, which has a lot of addiction and mental health challenges. So just going through that and asking, ‘Why am I the way that I am?’ By understanding the past, we understand the present and the future much more clearly. I think therapy is great,” she said.
Miley says that sobriety has done wonders for her so far, giving her increased motivation and mental clarity. “The thing that I love about it is waking up 100%, 100% of the time," she said. "I don’t want to wake up feeling groggy. I want to wake up feeling ready.”
