REVIEW/Pics: Hot Tub Time Machine
(Thursday, March 11, 2010 - BlackVibes.com)
I went to see HOT TUB TIME MACHINE which stars John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke. They're a group of best friends who've become bored with their adult lives and after a crazy night of drinking in a ski resort hot tub, wake up and realize that they have transported back in time, 1986 to be precise. Hot Tub Time Machine is a comedy about the three 40-something guys who have been friends since childhood, but now their lives suck. Adam ...   Read More

Raheem DeVaughn, "The Love & War MasterPeace," (Jive) Raheem DeVaughn's latest CD is like open mic night at a jazz cafe. BlackVibes.com Reviews... KATT WILLIAMS - Pimpadelic
(Thursday, December 3, 2009 - BlackVibes.com)
I recently got the Katt Williams "Pimpadelic" 90 minute DVD in the mail, so I popped it in the player and proceeded to hear the same tired ass jokes from the HBO special and other sets I have heard him in. There are a few new jokes sprinkled in here and there, but the set is the same. He talks abou...   Read More

Movie Review: 'GOOD HAIR' Laughs Instead Of Cries
(Tuesday, October 6, 2009 - AP)
What's so funny about so many black women wanting "white" hair? Plenty, it turns out, in Chris Rock's surprisingly insightful documentary, "Good Hair." The well-known history of black people straightening their natural curls is more tragedy than comedy, rooted in the bygone belief that all things European were better than anything African. But Rock sheds new light on this old story through a poignant mix of interviews, investigation and his trad...   Read More

Review: Dov Simens Film School in Detroit
(Friday, August 21, 2009 - BlackVibes.com)
Dov SimensRecently, we had the opportunity to attend the Dov Simens Film Seminar at the MotorCity Casino & Hotel in Detroit, MI. We decided to cover this event for two reasons: We provide a heavy amount of music industry coverage and felt the need to balance our content The event was being held in our hometown of Detroit, where the people have been hit hard by unemployment and foreclosures. In case you haven't heard, Michigan is the new "it" spot for filmmaking. The State of Michigan recently passed legislation authorizi...   Read More

Music Review: Asher Roth shines on debut CD
(Monday, April 20, 2009 - AP)
Asher Roth, "Asleep In the Bread Aisle" (Universal Records) Most people immediately compare Asher Roth to rap vet Eminem, but the 23-year-old newcomer proves he's more than just Marshall Mathers 2.0 on his debut CD. On "Asleep In the Bread Aisle," Roth does sound like Eminem at times — not lyrically, but vocally. But after giving the CD a full run, listeners will quickly drop the comparisons. He addresses the issue on "As I Em," rapping, "That's all I got, there's nothing else for me to say/If I don't confront the problem it will never go away." What Roth does best is storytell: He deli...   Read More

Music Review: MIMS is impressive on new CD
(Monday, April 13, 2009 - AP)
MIMS, "Guilt" (Capitol Records) MIMS stood on top of the charts in 2007 with his megahit "This Is Why I'm Hot," but his success was fleeting. The rapper is hoping to have a longer stay with his sophomore disc, "Guilt." He tries to copy the success of "This Is Why I'm Hot" on the first single "Move (If You Wanna)," using simple rhymes and a catchy beat to draw in the listener. Too bad it isn't as hot as "Hot." But while "Move" is lackluster, that doesn't mean the rest of "Guilt" falls flat. He offers solid tracks such as "Chasing Sunshine" featuring KVN and "On and On," showing his ability to...   Read More

BlackVibes.com Reviews...Slumdog Millionaire on DVD
(Wednesday, April 8, 2009 - BlackVibes.com)
Unless you've been living in a cave for the last six months, you've undoubtedly been swept up by the Slumdog Millionaire craze. For the uninitiated, Slumdog Millionaire centers around a poor, young Indian boy who, by chance, ends up as a contestant on India's version of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?' He advances through the contest further than anyone ever has and is accused of cheating. While being interrogated, the film tells how he's arrived at the answers based on his life experiences. He's grown up in one of India's shantytowns amongst poverty, turmoil and over-crowded streets and ...   Read More

Music Review: Posthumous Left Eye CD shows talent
(Monday, January 26, 2009 - AP)
Left Eye, "Eye Legacy" (Mass Appeal Entertainment/Koch Records) Though Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was already a Grammy-winning, multiplatinum star as part of the superstar R&B/pop group TLC, many wondered whether Lopes — the energetic rapper of the best-selling girl group — could make it as a solo artist. Lopes hoped to prove her doubters wrong. She had a 2001 CD "Supernova," but it was never released domestically, only overseas. Plans for a second disc were on tap, but she died tragically the next year in a fatal car crash in Honduras. Almost seven years after her death, Lopes' dre...   Read More
