The Iowa Cancer Consortium is looking for a full-time Communications & Outreach Coordinator to:

  • Oversee and/or develop communication materials and methods.
  • Facilitate collaborative groups of cancer control professionals and advocates addressing cancer prevention, screening, treatment, quality of life and health equity in Iowa.
  • Coordinate educational series/sessions to build the capacity of Iowa's cancer control professionals and advocates to reduce the burden of cancer in the state.
  • Participate and provide leadership in the design/revision, plan, promotion, evaluation and implementation of the Iowa Cancer Plan.
  • Contribute passion and drive to a highly functioning team of professionals.

    The Iowa Cancer Consortium is a statewide nonprofit coalition of health care providers, public health professionals, caregivers, researchers, cancer survivors, volunteers and advocates working together to reduce the burden of cancer in Iowa. It connects new and sometimes unlikely partners who want to make bigger impacts with their work and resources within cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, quality of life and health equity. The Consortium is funded primarily by a grant from the Iowa Department of Public Health and staffed by employees of the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

    Register Now for the 2nd Annual Fully Involved Young Women's Fire Academy


     

    CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - May 31, 2018 -  The Cedar Rapids Fire Department is encouraging young women between the ages of 15 and 20 years of age to participate in the 2nd Annual "Fully Involved Young Women's Fire Academy."

    Last year's program was one of the first of its kind in the fire service.  The curriculum for the Academy was developed by five female members of the Fire Department.  The Academy is also primarily taught by female firefighters. 

    Young women who have thought about a career as a firefighter are encouraged to participate in this program.  Participants will put on firefighter turnout gear and an air pack, conduct search and rescue drills, get certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and take the physical qualification test.  The Academy is designed to teach leadership and team-building skills.

    The Young Women's Fire Academy will be held from August 6-10, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day.  The cost of the Academy is only $30.

    Edgewood Road NW between Westwood and Crestwood Drive Lane Reduction


     

    CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Effective Monday, June 18, southbound traffic on Edgewood Road NW will be reduced to one lane between Westwood and Crestwood Drive for installation of a turn lane.  Work is anticipated to take approximately five (5) weeks to complete. Traffic may experience delays.

    Thrivent Night at the Ballpark to Benefit Special Olympics


     

    Cedar Rapids, IA - June 5, 2018 - The Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department invites the public to support the local Special Olympics program and cheer for the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Tuesday, June 26. Thrivent Financial has bought Veterans Memorial Park, 950 Rockford Road SW, for the evening and all ticket sales will support the Cedar Rapids Special Olympics program. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.The game begins at 6:35 p.m.

    FUSE music and movement at McGrath Amphitheatre



     

    Cedar Rapids, IA - May 16, 2018 -  The Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department is excited to offer a new and original exercise experience this summer for ages 12 and up at the McGrath Amphitheatre. FUSE (Fitness, Unity, Spirituality, Energy), led by Lindsay Olson and Riley Mullane, combines a live DJ with plyometric movements and body weight exercises for circuits with cardio and strength training. Yoga will also be incorporated near the end of the workout. No equipment is needed. Participants should bring a water bottle and towel and prepare for a fun, high-energy workout to the best beats.

    The one-hour classes are $10 per day and begin at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, June 12, June 26, July 10, July 24, August 14 and August 28. Registration is available at the amphitheater on the scheduled date (cash or check) or in advance at CRREC.org. FUSE apparel will be available for purchase. Participants under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

    FUSE Leaders:
    Lindsay Olson, former Coe College swimmer, has worked in corporate wellness for 4 years and is the Corporate Fitness and Wellness Coordinator for United Fire Group. She has helped several businesses in the corridor turn the corner to a better health culture. She's personally competed in: 37 sprint triathlons, 5 half marathons, 2 marathons, and a half-ironman. Lindsay's ultimate goal is to help people become the best version of themselves by means of movement and motivation.

    Riley Mullane has spent more than 13 years as a DJ performing at 250+ weddings and 350+ corporate events. He continues to push for innovation and successful event execution throughout the corridor. As one of the area's only Event Experience Consultants, he works directly with businesses and hospitality groups to ensure their event planning experience is done efficiently, and most importantly, effectively from beginning to end.
