Indy man arrested for attempted murder after shooting leaves victim nearly blind

INDIANAPOLIS - An Indianapolis man is behind bars after he was accused of attempted murder following a shooting on Indy's near northeast side that left another man nearly blind.
Court records did not explain a motive for the shooting, but like a lot of shooting survivors, the victim suffered lifelong health problems because of the violence.
In middle of the night in late January near 30th and Olney, police were called after a man was shot and critically wounded inside his own home.
"The victim was hurt pretty bad, so he was not able to talk to detectives or the officers before he went to the hospital," said IMPD captain John Arvin on scene in January.
Fortunately, that victim survived being shot in the wrist and his left eye. While in the hospital, the victim reportedly told police he was shot by someone he knew.
Court records claim that information, coupled with phone records which placed the suspect near the scene, led police to arrest 45-year-old Christopher Jethroe this week.
Following the shooting inside the home, the victim lost vision in his left eye. That injury was coupled with a preexisting condition in his right eye that has left him practically blind.
So far this year, IMPD reports that the victim is one of 127 non-fatal shooting victims across the city.
That number is down significantly compared to the last several years.
Still, every year, several hundred people are wounded in shootings around Indianapolis.
That's why in 2022, the city started a non-fatal shooting response team. The victim's assistance program is meant to connect survivors with resources to help them recover from their injuries.
"The most important thing for me is to know we are here and know you have access to this information," DaAndra Dycus, one of the city's advocates, said in 2022. "We're not here to force anything but we want to make sure people have easy access to resources."
For his part, before being arrested this week, the affidavit claims Jethroe denied taking part in the shooting.
In addition to attempted murder, the suspect is also being held on preliminary charges of aggravated battery and unlawful possession of a weapon by a series violent felon.
Ultimately it will be up the prosecutor's office to file formal charge in the case.
