Born in 1986 in Birmingham, AL. Young Skoolz aka Samuel Bonner Jr., grew up around music in the church as well as playing the alto saxophone in the school band by 8 years old.
With a deep connection with music and writing he had his 1st poem published in the 4th grade. He continued advancing musically and lyrically up into high school.
His eldest brother introduced him to hip-hop by letting him hear Nas for the first time. This was when he fell in love with hip-hop music and culture. His brother showed him how to integrate the poetry he wrote and musical knowledge he had into making his own hip-hop music.
Then put him into his first home studio where he fell in love with the recording process. By the age of 15, Skoolz got his first song on the local radio station in Birmingham, Alabama 95.7 Jamz. Before graduating high school he had 4 songs on the radio. During college, his sound as well as ambition continued to evolve.
By 23, he founded his own record label called Blakk Sheep Entertainment. After securing a building and increasing his local notoriety, he proceeded to build a brand from the ground up by hosting showcases and open mics for local artist.
Being that he was young and inexperienced in business it all ended in a less that ideal way. When he finally graduated college, he decided to go in a different direction by pursuing his career in robotics.
For 6 years he traveled all over the US and Canada as a private robotic engineering contractor. He was very successful and built a business and platonic with people all over the world.
In the midst of his success, he felt an emptiness that he was unable to fill. He realized that his passion, music, was missing. While on a contract in Detroit, Michigan he connected with a talented recording engineer and recorded his first EP in over 6 years entitled Chameleon.
It received a lot of positive feedback and that only confirmed for him that this is what he should do with his life. Since that EP release, he's made multiple videos and started his own songwriting and artist development company YS Inc.
