A$AP Rocky Explains Why He's In No Rush To Drop New Music

A$AP Rocky isn't racing to flood the charts or chase streaming numbers-instead, the Harlem rapper says every move he makes, from his long-awaited album Don't Be Dumb to his ventures in fashion and design, has to serve a bigger purpose: legacy.

"I don't do all these different endeavors just because I got to be the first at the top of the mountain and plant the flag," he told Perfect Magazine in an interview published Wednesday, October 30. "Because it's not really about who did it first. It's about who did it the best. Everything I do is based off building legacy. That's why I'm not so eager to just drop, drop, drop. I don't do things to just try and stay relevant, or keep my name in the conversation. I try to do natural things, creative, ambitious things that really satisfy me."

The 37-year-old rapper has been teasing Don't Be Dumb for years, but despite releasing singles like "Highjack," "Tailor Swif," "Ruby Rosary" and "Pray4DaGang," the full project has yet to land.

A$AP Rocky Regrets Publicizing Album Release Date

Earlier this month, he confirmed the album is finished but gave no release date, saying he now prefers to "let the music speak for itself."

He also admitted that announcing release dates in the past was "a bit foolish" and has since decided to keep things fluid and organic.

Beyond music, Rocky's been juggling a lot. His creative agency and fashion label AWGE continues to grow, and his personal life has taken center stage.

He and Rihanna recently welcomed their third child, and he's been intentional about putting family first.

"I don't want to primarily blame it on my case, but life was life-ing," he said in September, referring to his ongoing legal issues. "We don't plan on having children, but when it happens, you gotta adjust and move with it. I gotta be present for my family, because that's first."

Originally expected in August 2024, Don't Be Dumb has faced delays due to sample clearance problems, leaks and Rocky's personal obligations. Still, the anticipation continues to build, and Rocky seems content with letting the art arrive on its own terms.
