Atlantic Starr is an American R&B band from White Plains, New York, best known for hits like "Always," "Secret Lovers," "Circles," and "Masterpiece."=nd
The band began in Greenburgh, New York, with members including the Lewis brothers (David, Wayne, Jonathan), Porter Carroll Jr., Clifford Archer, Joseph Phillips, and others. After performing under the name "Newban," they changed to Atlantic Starr when signed by A&M Records.
Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, they had several R&B hits and achieved crossover success with the 1985 album "As the Band Turns" and the single "Secret Lovers." Their 1987 album "All in the Name of Love" featured the No. 1 hit "Always." Following this, Barbara Weathers left for a solo career and was replaced by Porscha Martin.
In the early 1990s, they continued to produce hits with albums like "Love Crazy" and the single "Masterpiece." However, their popularity waned with the 1994 album "Time" on Arista Records. Despite lineup changes and decreased commercial success, Atlantic Starr continues to perform and released their 14th album, "Metamorphosis," in 2017.
Former members pursued solo careers: Porter Carroll Jr. released a solo album in 1986, Sharon Bryant scored R&B hits in 1989, Damon Rentie released solo albums in the mid-1980s, and William Sudderth remains active in the music industry.
