Family Of Freestyle Fellowship's P.E.A.C.E. Launches GoFundMe For Funeral

Mtulazaji Davis found himself at the center of Hip-Hop history as a founding member of the legendary Los Angeles group Freestyle Fellowship, but his family now finds themselves planning his funeral after the celebrated MC, known as P.E.A.C.E., died suddenly on October 24.

The 54-year-old's death sent ripples through the underground Hip-Hop community, where Freestyle Fellowship earned recognition for their innovative approach to rap music and complex lyrical patterns that influenced countless artists.

"A beautiful, brilliant light in our lives went out on the morning of October 24th, 2025, with the passing of Mtulazaji Davis-the legendary P.E.A.C.E. of Freestyle Fellowship," his children Inca Davis and Mayan Gutierrez-Davis wrote in a GoFundMe campaign launched to cover funeral expenses.

The family described Davis as more than just a Hip-Hop pioneer. "To the world, he was an amazingly gifted emcee, a founding member whose rhythmic genius and innovative spirit helped shape the entire landscape of underground hip-hop. But to us, he was simply Dad," they wrote.

Freestyle Fellowship formed in Los Angeles during the late 1980s and became known for their jazz-influenced production and intricate wordplay. The group, which also included members Aceyalone, Myka 9 and Self Jupiter, released several critically acclaimed albums that helped define the West Coast underground scene.

Davis's stage name P.E.A.C.E. reflected his personality, according to his family. "His heart was massive, his spirit unforgettable. There wasn't a dull moment or a boring interaction with our father; his personality was electric, unforgettable, and touched everyone lucky enough to know him."

The cause of death has not been disclosed. No memorial service date has been announced.

The GoFundMe campaign has raised over $4,500 toward a $55,000 goal to help cover "immediate and unexpected end-of-life expenses" and provide stability for his family. The fundraiser emphasizes it is the only official campaign for P.E.A.C.E.

"We are humbly reaching out to the community he loved and inspired-the hip-hop family and beyond-to help us lay him to rest with the dignity and love he deserves," the family wrote.

Freestyle Fellowship's influence extended far beyond their album sales, inspiring a generation of alternative Hip-Hop artists who valued lyrical complexity over commercial appeal. The group's 1993 album "Innercity Griots" is considered a classic of underground Hip-Hop.

Davis leaves behind his children and a legacy that helped shape modern rap music's artistic possibilities.
