Nelly Furtado Announces She's Stepping Away From Performing After 25 Years In Music

Nelly Furtado marked the 25th anniversary of her breakout album with a major career shift, announcing she's stepping away from live performances indefinitely.

The Grammy-winning singer revealed the news in an Instagram post, telling followers, "I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future." She added, "I plan to pursue other creative and personal endeavors that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life."




The timing of the announcement aligns with a milestone in Furtado's career-25 years since the release of her debut album Whoa, Nelly! in 2000.




The record catapulted her to international fame, driven by the success of "I'm Like a Bird," which earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2002.




Furtado's decision to pause live shows comes shortly after a high-profile return to music.

In September 2024, she dropped her seventh studio album 7, her first since 2017's The Ride. The comeback was inspired by hearing her older songs played by DJs at events and clubs.




"I really feel like I was called back to the industry by the industry, especially DJs," she told Grammy.com last year. "I would go out and hear my songs played before arena shows of other artists, and at house parties and clubs. There was a sense of joy and celebration in it. I thought, this can only be remixed so many times, I better go make some new stuff."

Nelly Furtado Reflects On 2024 Tour

The Portuguese-Canadian artist wrapped her Better Than Ever summer tour in August, performing at festivals and venues across multiple cities. Reflecting on the experience in her Instagram post, she said it had "been so fun" to get "out on stages again and seeing up close, the true lasting power of good music."




Even as she steps away from the stage, Furtado emphasized that her connection to music remains strong. "I have enjoyed my career immensely" and will still "identify as a songwriter forever," she said.

Over her decades-long career, Furtado has released seven studio albums, including Folklore (2003), Loose (2006), Mi Plan (2009), and The Spirit Indestructible (2012).




Her chart-topping hits include "Maneater," "Say It Right," "Turn Off the Light," and "Promiscuous."
