Microsoft Flight Simulator World Update 21 Takes Pilots Back to Australia

Microsoft Flight Simulator pilots have a fresh reason to point the nose south. World Update 21: Australia is now available, bringing a major visual refresh to one of the simulator's most geographically diverse regions.
Released on May 5, 2026, the update marks the first major Australia-focused world update since World Update 7 in January 2021. Microsoft says the new release was created in partnership with Bing Maps, Vexcel, Gaya, and Asobo, and includes updated photogrammetry and TIN surface texturing across 40 areas of interest spanning all six Australian states and its two main self-governing territories.
For virtual aviators, this means sharper detail across a continent built for adventure flying: Sydney's urban skyline, the Blue Mountains, the Great Barrier Reef gateways, Tasmania, the Outback, Western Australia's coast, and plenty of places where the horizon stretches out like it owns the place.
The update also includes a strong airport package, with six handcrafted airports from Gaya:
- Broken Hill Airport (YBHI)
- Broome International Airport (YBRM)
- Coober Pedy Airport (YCBP)
- Bathurst Airport (YBTH)
- RAAF Base Tindal / Katherine Tindal Airport (YPTN)
- Lord Howe Island Airport (YLHI)
Microsoft notes that Broken Hill is an important regional hub and a base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, while Lord Howe Island Airport remains a key stop for light aircraft traveling between Australia and New Zealand.
World Update 21 also adds new activities for both Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. MSFS 2024 pilots get three Discovery Flights, five Precision Landings, two Low Altitude Challenges, and two Rally Race Challenges. MSFS 2020 pilots receive three Discovery Flights, three Landing Challenges, and a Bush Trip along Australia's Great Ocean Road.
The update is free for all owners of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Pilots just need to make sure their sim is updated, then download World Update 21 from the in-sim marketplace.
So, whether you're dodging red dirt thermals in the Outback, skimming the coastline near the Twelve Apostles, or dropping into Lord Howe Island with your palms doing a tiny cockpit rain dance, Australia just got a whole lot more tempting.
