Bobby Brown Opens Up About Past Alcohol Abuse: I Needed It To Wake Up & Function

Bobby Brown is speaking on his struggle with alcohol abuse in the past.

While on Red Table Talk, he spoke on the impact alcoholism has had on his life and said,

"[Because of] alcohol, I started losing bodily function. My body started shutting down because I was drinking that much. My body just was giving out on me. Even with alcohol, I got to the point where I needed it."

He added that alcohol wasn't a "recreational" habit, but something he depended on greatly.

"I wasn't getting drunk anymore. I wasn't getting a little tipsy anymore. I needed it to wake up. I needed it to stop the shakes, to function on a day-to-day basis. For me, it wasn't recreational."

Bobby Brown also spoke on the tragic death of his son Bobby Brown, Jr. He was, unfortunately, the singer's second child to pass away. His daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown died at 22 years old in 2015, months after being in a coma following an incident where she was discovered unconscious in a bathtub. Bobby Brown's ex-wife, Whitney Houston, also tragically died after being found unresponsive in a bathtub in February 2012.

He and his wife Alicia Etheredge-Brown told hosts Jada Pinkett SmithWillow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Norris how they navigated through telling their son Cassius, 11, how Bobby Brown, Jr. died. An autopsy report revealed last month that alcohol, cocaine, and fentanyl were contributing factors to his passing. He was 27 years old.

Alicia Etheredge-Brown said,

"It was high anxiety for me, Bobby too, so we talked to our therapist, 'How do we explain this?' I wanted him to hear it from us."

She continued,

"We sat down and we spoke, honest, truthfully [about] what was found, how he did it. We first asked what he thought. [It's] terrifying for a kid to think that maybe my brother went to sleep and he didn't wake up."

Bobby Brown and Kim Ward, the mother of Bobby Brown, Jr., previously called for justice.

The singer said in a statement last month,

"My family continues to mourn my son's death. This epidemic is out of control and those supplying this lethal drug should be held responsible for the death and destruction that it causes."
