For months now, rumors about the plot for Spider-Man: Brand New Day have been all over the place with word that it would be a more grounded street-level adventure with the Kingpin as the main villain and Daredevil joining the fray to rumors that it would be another multiverse affair, which might've included Tom Hardy's Venom popping up.
While details about the film are still scarce, it seems like we've finally gotten our first big news about the film as The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Jon Bernthal's The Punisher has been cast to star alongside Tom Holland's Spidey in the upcoming film. Say word! While we love the idea of Spider-Man and The Punisher crossing paths. It makes things a bit more murky as to what direction Marvel Studios is planning on going with as Kingpin actor, Vincent D'Onofrio, stated that his Kingpin character can't be featured in Marvel films due to rights and ownership issues.
The big news comes weeks after rumors were circulating that Mark Ruffalo's Hulk was said to be joining the cast as well and that he would actually be the savage version of the Hulk instead of the boring smart Hulk that we've been subjected to ever since Avengers: Endgame.
Now that it's being reported that The Punisher will be tagging along with Spidey for his latest adventure, it doesn't really seem like the Hulk would fit into whatever director, Destin Daniel Cretton has planned for Brand New Day. But hey, this is Marvel, right? Anything is possible.
THR reports:
The only thing clear at this stage is that Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are reprising their roles as MJ and best friend Ned, although how substantial those roles will be remains unclear. And Stranger Thingsstar Sadie Sink is the big new addition so far. The story takes place after the events of the previous movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which the entire world knew Peter Parker was Spider-Man and then had that knowledge erased.
Having Bernthal as the Punisher seems to point to a slightly more grounded angle on the story as the character hails from the gritty street corner of Marvel's universe and, in the comics at least, uses fists, knives and guns to tussle with bad guys, rather than spells or fancy tech. But hey, having him square off against a rampaging Hulk could be fun, too.
Yeah, we're pretty sure the Hulk would make quick work of The Punisher regardless of the arsenal that Frank Castle may be carrying around with him. Just sayin'.
As for the main antagonist of the next Spidey film, that's still pretty much up in the air. Rumors have everyone from Tombstone and the Scorpion to Tarantula being the villain for the film. All underwhelming choices, we know, but we're still going to go see it regardless. The Punisher's in it for God's sake!
